More than 100 cars were involved in a shocking highway pile-up in China, with three people hospitalised.

The crash took place on Thursday morning on an icy overpass in the Chinese city of Suzhou, according to Suzhou Industrial Park traffic police.

According to authorities, in addition to the three people hospitalised, six were in a less serious condition.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway, though it appears an icy road surface may have been a contributing factor.

Eyewitness footage published online shows a sea of crashed cars, with one sticking up out of the wreckage.

Large parts of China have been dealing with blizzards and icy rain over the past few weeks, overlapping with the Lunar New Year holiday period where millions of people have been travelling.
