The new petrol-powered Mini John Cooper Works (JCW) packs a new transmission, fresher styling, and modest price increases.

Unveiled last month, the hottest versions of Mini’s three-door Cooper hatchback are due in local showrooms between April and June 2025.

Priced from $57,990 before on-road costs in base Classic guise, the entry-level JCW is $240 more than the Essential grade of the outgoing model, but the upcoming version is more fuel-efficient and no slower than its predecessor.

Pricing for the step-up JCW Favoured starts from $60,990 before on-road costs, also an increase of $240 compared to the previously mid-range Classic, but a reduction of $3260 compared to the outgoing JCW Yours flagship.

Its new looks, the Mini JCW is largely unchanged under the skin, with a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine continuing to produce 170kW of power and 320Nm of torque.

While it remains front-wheel drive, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission replaces the eight-speed torque-converter of the outgoing model, as has become common in models on this platform.

There’s been no change to its 0-100km/h time, with the hot hatch continuing to complete the sprint in a claimed 6.1 seconds.

Claimed fuel consumption in Australia has dropped from 6.3L/100km to 5.7L/100km.

The JCW continues on the updated looks of the broader Cooper range, which includes new-look headlights, a revised grille and angular tail lights.

Inside, the cabin has scored updates identical to those seen in the electric hatchback, which includes black and red patterns, with the dashboard incorporating a chequered flag motif.

The front seats are upholstered in black synthetic leather, with knitted fabric at shoulder height and red accent stitching.

In the centre of the dashboard is a 240mm round OLED infotainment touchscreen, which also serves as the instrument cluster.

There’s a new ‘Go-Kart’ driving mode which Mini claims brings an ambience “tailored to performance and motorsport flair”, and displays additional information such as power, torque and g-forces on the central screen.
