Kia’s strong-selling Sportage has earned a five-star safety rating with ANCAP, based on tests carried out by Euro NCAP.
The Sportage scored 87 per cent for adult occupant protection, 87 per cent for child occupant protection, 66 per cent for vulnerable road user protection, and 74 per cent for safety assist.
The five-star rating applies across the whole range currently sold in Australia, with all engines and trim levels covered.
ANCAP noted the cars tested in Europe weren’t fitted with the “junction assist” AEB function standard on Australian models. European cars also have a shorter wheelbase than local models.
The junction assist system applies the brakes if the driver pulls out of a junction and it detects a passing car could cause a collision, and would have likely earned the Sportage a slightly higher safety assist score.
The whole Kia Sportage range comes standard with the following safety equipment:
- AEB with pedestrian/cyclist/junction assist
- Blind-spot assist
- Rear cross-traffic assist
- Lane-keep assist
- Lane Following Assist
- Intelligent speed limit assist
- Adaptive cruise control (excludes manual models)
- Reversing camera
- Rear parking sensors
- Front-centre airbag
The Sportage GT-Line adds:
- 360-degree camera with 3D view
- Blind Spot View Monitor
- Parking collision avoidance assist in reverse
The Tucson joins the closely-related Hyundai Tucson in earning a five-star ANCAP rating.
The Tucson received an adult occupant protection rating of 86 per cent, a child occupant protection rating of 87 per cent, a vulnerable road user protection rating of 66 per cent, and a safety assist rating of 70 per cent.
