The 2021 BMW 5 Series won’t be fitted with a gargantuan grille, leaked images have revealed.
The new front end is far more aggressive than before, with slim headlights more in keeping with the smaller 3 Series and larger 7 Series, and a more angular front bumper than before.
Although its grille has grown slightly – the openings are now linked, and its strakes are more prominent than before – it’s subtle compared to the gargantuan unit fitted to the 7 Series with which the 5 Series shares a platform.
The changes are more subtle down back, where the taillights feature new graphics to match the latest 3 Series. There’s a pronounced LED signature running through the lights, while the housing itself is now finished in gloss black.
There are new alloy wheel designs, and the 530e hybrid pictured is finished in what looks to be a new shade of blue.
Inside, the new 5 Series is expected to feature the latest BMW OS7.0 infotainment system to bring it into line with the high-tech Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Audi A6.
Currently, the 5 Series features the last version of iDrive. Although not lacking in functionality, it currently doesn’t have the same clever ‘Hey BMW’ voice control or trick digital dials as even the entry-level 1 Series.
The current engine range is also expected to expand. Along with the existing four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel options, the 530e plug-in hybrid is likely to be replaced by a 545e packing an inline-six petrol engine and around 300kW of power.
The new 5 Series is expected to launch late in May.
