The new Land Rover Defender might be getting all the attention from the public right now but its sibling, the Land Rover Discovery, is a stalwart in the large luxury SUV market.
The range opens at $72,856 before on-road costs for the SD4 S, or around the price of a top-spec Ford Everest or Toyota Prado, to $126,034 before on-roads for the SDV6 HSE Luxury that battles with rivals like the Volvo XC90.

Engines
The 2020 Land Rover Discovery offers a choice of two engines. SD4 models use a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine producing 177kW of power and 430Nm of torque, while SDV6 models use a 3.0-litre twin-turbo diesel V6 engine producing 225kW of power and 700Nm of torque.
All models use all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Fuel Economy
The 2020 Land Rover Discovery consumes 7.6L/100km on the combined cycle in SD4 models and 7.7L/100km in SDV6 models.
The SD4 S uses a single-speed transfer case with high range only, while all other Discovery models feature a two-speed transfer case with high and low range. A locking rear differential is optional across the range.
Dimensions
The 2020 Land Rover Discovery measures 4970mm long, 2073mm wide and 1909mm tall. Luggage space measures 258L, expanding to 1231L with the third row folded and 2500L with the second and third rows folded.
Safety
When the Land Rover Discovery was tested by ANCAP in 2017, it received a rating of five stars. That score was based on an adult protection score of 90 per cent, a child occupant protection score of 80 per cent, a pedestrian protection score of 75 per cent and a safety assist score of 73 per cent.
All 2020 Land Rover Discovery models come standard with autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, driver attention monitoring, and front, front-side and curtain airbags.
High-speed autonomous emergency braking is standard in the HSE and HSE Luxury and optional in all other variants. Also available on some members of the Discovery range are blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit assist, and traffic sign recognition.
