The 2021 BMW X5 is available with a choice of two diesel powertrains, two petrols, and a plug-in hybrid, plus a petrol-powered M Competition flagship.
UPDATE, 11/08/21 –BMW has confirmed price changes to the X5 after the Luxury Car Tax threshold changed on July 1, 2021.
It was Australia’s best-selling large luxury SUV last year, edging out its arch-rival the Mercedes-Benz GLE wagon (2956 v 2854 sales).
Those seeking a more distinctive if less practical BMW SUV this size should find the related X6 to their liking.

The 2021 BMW X5 xDrive25d is powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine producing 170kW of power and 450Nm of torque.
The xDrive30d uses a 3.0-litre inline-six turbo-diesel producing 195kW of power and 620Nm of torque.
The xDrive40i uses a 3.0-litre inline-six turbo-petrol producing 250kW and 450Nm, while the xDrive45e adds a plug-in hybrid system for a total output of 290kW and 600Nm.
M50i-badged models step up to a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 producing 390kW and 750Nm, while the range-topping X5 M has a bump in power to 450kW.
All models use an eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission.
The xDrive25d does the 0-100km/h sprint in 7.5 seconds while the xDrive30d does it in 6.5 seconds, the xDrive40i in 5.5 seconds, the xDrive45e in 5.6 seconds, the M50i Pure and M50i in 4.3 seconds and the M Competition in 3.8 seconds.
The 2021 BMW X5 uses 6.7L/100km in the xDrive25d on the combined cycle, the xDrive30d uses 7.2L/100km, the xDrive40i in 9.2L/100km, the M50i models use 11.5L/100km and the M Competition uses 12.5L/100km.
The xDrive45e uses 2.3L/100km and has an electric-only range of 87km on the stricter WLTP cycle.
The 2021 BMW X5 measures 4922mm long, 1745mm tall and 2004mm wide on a 2975mm wheelbase.
The M Competition is 4938mm long, 1748mm tall and 2015mm wide.
Boot space is 650L behind the second row, expanding to 1870L with it folded.
The 2021 BMW X5 is covered by a three-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.
BMW offers a five-year/80,000km servicing plan for X5 models priced at $2250. It covers the replacement of fluids and filters, though the replacement of brake pads and discs and wiper blades is covered only under a more expensive Plus plan, priced at $5950.
The BMW X5 has a five-star rating from ANCAP based on testing conducted by Euro NCAP in 2018.
It received a score of 89 per cent for adult occupant protection, 87 per cent for child occupant protection, 75 per cent for vulnerable road user protection and 71 per cent for safety assist.
