Genesis is working on a swoopy Shooting Brake wagon version of the new mid-sized G70 – and it’s a chance to come to Australia.
Hyundai’s luxury brand has been snapped testing the car by Korean Car Blog, with a rakish roofline and styling cues clearly nicked from the latest-generation G80 sedan and GV70 SUV.
The look is also in keeping with the facelifted G70 sedan spied in May, which packs a new look in keeping with its more recent Genesis counterparts.
Genesis couldn’t confirm whether the G70 Shooting Brake is bound for Australia, given it has only just been spied for the first time.
However the G70 sedan is built in right-hand drive and offered in Australia.
Genesis is also a niche brand finding its feet, meaning huge volumes – generally a sticking point with wagons, as the world goes crazy for crossovers – aren’t necessarily a prerequisite for the car to be approved for our market.
Were it to be approved, the G70 Shooting Brake would go head-to-head with the BMW 3 Series Touring and Audi A4 Avant, along with the soon-to-be-revealed Volkswagen Arteon Shooting Brake.
Genesis is currently finding its feet in Australia, having launched 12 months ago with just one boutique-style showroom in Sydney.
The brand has only sold 42 cars so far this year which, while fractionally more than during the same period last year, puts it behind even Bentley.
It’s still selling cars out of only one dealership nationwide, however, as the planned Brisbane and Melbourne locations have yet to open.
The additional dealers should help increase volume, though the brand has said from the outset it’s not focused on volume.
