The Audi Q5 is finally getting a sleeker body style to go up against the BMW X4 and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe.
The 2022 Audi Q5 Sportback arrives in August 2021, priced from $77,700 before on-road costs.
You do pay a premium for the sleeker body style, with the SQ5 Sportback TDI, for example, costing $6000 more than the equivalent wagon.
Unlike the wagon range, Q5 Sportback models come standard with the sportier-looking S line package. Over in the wagon range, this package is available only in the 50 TDI, with the 40 TDI and 45 TFSI instead coming in a Sport variant.
The addition of the S line package means there are feature additions over equivalently-powered wagon models, like front sports seats and power-folding exterior mirrors with heating, auto dimming and dipping in the 40 TDI.
There’s a smaller range than the wagon with only three variants, two of which are powered by turbo-diesel engines.
Audi says that with its twin-dosing technology, which involves two SCR catalytic converters, the TDI models come in “substantially below” the latest Euro 6d emissions standards.
All prices exclude on-road costs.
The 40 TDI uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine with a 12V mild-hybrid system. Outputs are 150kW of power and 400Nm of torque, and it uses a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. It has a 0-100km/h time of 7.6 seconds.
The 45 TFSI uses a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a 12V mild-hybrid system and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Outputs are 183kW and 370Nm, with the 0-100km/h time reduced to 6.3 seconds.
The SQ5 uses a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6 engine producing 251kW of power and 700Nm of torque and featuring a 48V mild-hybrid system. It uses an eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission and reaches 100km/h in 5.1 seconds.
All Q5 and SQ5 models are all-wheel drive, though the Q5 models use the quattro ultra system, which defaults to front-wheel drive unless more traction is needed.
The SQ5 uses a permanent all-wheel drive system with a self-locking centre differential that can direct up to 85 per cent of torque to the rear wheels. By default, it directs 40 per cent to the front axle and 60 per cent to the rear.
The 2022 Audi Q5 Sportback uses 5.4L/100km on the combined cycle in 40 TDI guise and 8.0L/100km in the 45 TFSI. The SQ5 uses 7.1L/100km.
CO2 emissions are 142g/km in the 40 TDI, 183g/km in the 45 TFSI and 186g/km in the SQ5.
The 2022 Audi Q5 Sportback measures 4689mm long, 1893mm wide (2140mm including the mirrors) and 1660mm tall. The SQ5 is slightly lower at 1633mm tall.
It has 510L of luggage space, only 10L down on the wagon. Underneath the load floor is a space-saver spare.
The 2022 Audi Q5 and SQ5 Sportback require servicing every 12 months or 15,000km, whichever comes first.
In addition to a three-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, Audi offers a five-year servicing plan.
For Q5 models it’s priced at $3140, while the SQ5’s five-year plan costs $3170.
The Audi Q5 and SQ5 have a five-star rating from ANCAP, and this carries over to the Sportback variants.
That’s based on an adult occupant protection score of 93 per cent, a child occupant protection score of 86 per cent, a pedestrian protection score of 73 per cent and a safety assist score of 56 per cent.
All models come standard with the following safety equipment:
