One of Mercedes-Benz’s best-selling models in Australia is about to get a nip-and-tuck.
Spied in sporty Mercedes-AMG A35 form, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz A-Class is getting tweaked styling front and rear.
The updated A-Class line will likely debut in 2022.
There look to be new headlights and tail lights, as well as a restyled front bumper and grille. The rear bumper, in contrast, appears unchanged.
Our photographers couldn’t get a good look at the interior as the dashboard was partly covered, however the updated A-Class is expected to get the latest version of the MBUX infotainment system.
A larger touchscreen is also a possibility. The current car uses dual 10.25-inch screens for the instrument cluster and infotainment.
It’s not yet known if there’ll be any mechanical changes.
Currently, Mercedes-Benz offers a sprawling range of four-cylinder powertrains in the local A-Class range.
It opens with the front-wheel drive A180, which uses a turbocharged 1.3-litre with 100kW of power and 200Nm of torque.
The plug-in hybrid A250e pairs a turbo 1.3-litre with an electric motor and 15.6kWh battery for total outputs of 160kW and 450Nm.
The all-wheel drive A250 packs a 2.0-litre turbo with 165kW and 350Nm, while the AMG A35 bumps those outputs up to 225kW and 400Nm.
Finally, the fiery AMG A45 S pumps out 310kW and 500Nm, good for a 0-100km/h sprint of just 3.9 seconds.
To the end of August, Mercedes-Benz has sold 2891 A-Class hatchbacks and sedans, ahead of the GLB (2615).
It’s being outsold by the C-Class and GLE lines if you bundle their body styles together: 2547 C-Class sedan and wagons and 827 coupes and convertibles (3374 in total) and 2352 GLE wagons and 748 coupes (3100 in total).
The A-Class faces stiff competition from BMW’s small cars, while a redesigned Audi A3 family is due in 2022.
Year-to-date, BMW has sold 1913 1 Series hatchbacks and 1459 2 Series Gran Coupes, or 3372 combined.
