2022 Volkswagen Golf price and specs: Base model withdrawn

Volkswagen has increased prices of its redesigned Golf range again.

UPDATE, 04/05/2022 – Volkswagen Australia is increasing the asking price of the entire Golf range, excluding the high-performance R hatch and wagon, again by between $500 and $1900 from June 1, 2022.

“Unfortunately due to global increases in production, supplier and transport costs, certain models will have an increased RRP from June 1, 2022,” said a Volkswagen Australia spokesperson in a statement.

“We strive to ensure that any cost increase is absorbed or – where it cannot be – kept to a minimum.”

This latest price increase of $500-1900 follows an initial $200 price increase for model year 2022 vehicles, which brought standard DAB digital radio across the range.

In January 2022, Volkswagen also confirmed price increases of between $740 and $1190 across the range, but no further changes to specification.

At that time, Volkswagen Australia also confirmed the entry-level 110TSI manual and automatic hatchbacks would be unavailable for the rest of the 2022 model year.

Of those two variants, only the automatic will return for the 2023 model year.

Engines

The 2022 Volkswagen Golf, in base, Life and R-Line trims, is powered by a turbocharged 1.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 110kW of power and 250Nm of torque.

These models are front-wheel drive and use an eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission.

The Golf GTI upgrades to a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine producing 180kW and 370Nm, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. It’s also front-wheel drive but includes a locking front differential.

The Golf R hatch and wagon is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 235kW and 400Nm. This is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with drive sent through a 4Motion all-wheel drive system.

Fuel Economy

The 2022 Volkswagen Golf uses 5.8L/100km on the combined cycle in the automatic hatchback, 5.9L/100km in the automatic wagon, 7.0L/100km in the GTI, 7.8L/100km in the Golf R hatch, and 7.4L/100km in the Golf R Wagon.

All models require 95RON premium unleaded fuel, except for the two Golf R variants which require 98 RON.

Dimensions

The 2022 Volkswagen Golf hatchback measures 4284mm long, 1789mm wide and 1456mm tall, while the wagon measures 4633mm long, 1789mm wide and 1483mm tall.

The hatch has a 2636mm wheelbase, while the wagon has a 2686mm wheelbase.

Boot space is a claimed 374L in the hatch and 611L in the wagon with the rear seats in place. Their load volume expands to 1230L and 1642L, respectively, with the rear seats folded.

Servicing and Warranty

The 2022 Volkswagen Golf is backed by a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.

Maintenance is required every 12 months or 15,000km and Volkswagen offers three- and five-year prepaid service packages.

Safety

The 2022 Volkswagen Golf has a five-star ANCAP rating based on testing carried out by Euro NCAP in 2019.

It scored 95 per cent for adult occupant protection, 89 per cent for child occupant protection, 76 per cent for vulnerable road user protection, and 80 per cent for safety assist.
