Mitsubishi has given its Outlander SUV range some tweaks for the 2023 model year ahead of first arrivals during January next year.

UPDATE, 05/12/2022 – Mitsubishi has detailed the 2023 model year changes for the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid EV SUV which largely mirror the tweaks the petrol range receives.

Pricing for existing Outlander petrol variants are up by up to $1000, with the range now starting at $36,240 before on-road costs for the ES five-seat 2WD, and extending to $53,490 before on-road costs for the Exceed Tourer seven-seat AWD.

Pricing for the Outlander PHEV on the other hand is up by up to $1500, and starts at $55,490 before on-road costs for the ES five-seat, and extends to $69,990 before on-road costs for the Exceed Tourer seven-seat.

A new LS Black Edition 7-seat 2WD variant has joined the Outlander petrol range for the 2023 model year, plugging the gap between the regular LS and Aspire. It’s priced from $41,490 before on-road costs.

The LS Black Edition adds 20-inch black alloy wheels, premium paint, and blacked-out door mirrors, bumpers and grille. Inside it gets black headlining, a black “laser etched” gearshift surround, plus ‘Mi-Suede’ seats with synthetic leather bolsters.

All 2023 Mitsubishi Outlanders now feature an expanded autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system that now works when reversing, as well as a memory setting for the auto hold function. Petrol models get a HVAC refrigerant update.

The entry-level Outlander ES and Outlander PHEV ES get further additional safety in the form of rear cross-traffic alert and auto high-beam.

However, there’s a downside: The petrol Outlander ES grade now moves to an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, featuring wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, in place of the 9.0-inch interface with wireless Apple CarPlay – “due to ongoing parts supply constraints”.

The Outlander PHEV ES retains the 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay.

Further up the range, the Outlander Exceed, Outlander Exceed Tourer, Outlander PHEV Exceed, and Outlander PHEV Exceed Tourer get Mitsubishi’s MI-PILOT driving assistant.

This adds Traffic Jam Assist (adaptive cruise control that re-engages after a complete stop), Lane Keep Assist (using steering control assistance rather than wheel braking), and Speed Limit Assistance (adaptive cruise control that matches the Outlander to the indicated speed limit).

The steering wheel in these grades will now feature touch sensors to handle MI-PILOT engagement, and will disengage the system when the driver’s grip is not detected, when turn signals are on, or when windscreen wipers are continuously operated at their highest speed.

Furthermore, Outlander Exceed and Exceed Tourer petrol and PHEV grades also gain a heated steering wheel and sequential front indicators, while Exceed Tourer further adds standard rear seat heating and more two-tone paint options (Stirling Silver/Black Mica and Titanium/Black Mica are new).

Outlander Exceed and Exceed Tourer PHEV models are now no longer with the side mirror auto-tilt function though. This is due to “ongoing semiconductor shortages”.

The Outlander is a hit with buyers in the medium SUV segment, with 17,494 sales to the end of November and 10.9 per cent market share. This puts it ahead of the Kia Sportage (17,341 sales) and Hyundai Tucson (16,227 sales), and behind only the Toyota RAV4 (32,652 sales) and Mazda CX-5 (25,425 sales).

The Outlander is comfortably Mitsubishi’s second top-selling car in Australia now, behind the Triton.

    Drivetrain

This is mated to a continuously-variable transmission (CVT) with eight pre-programmed steps to mimic a conventional automatic. Drive is sent either to the front wheels only or through an all-wheel drive system.

Outlander PHEV models are powered by a plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting of an Atkinson cycle 98kW 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, twin electric motors and a 20.0kWh lithium-ion battery pack, producing total system outputs of 185kW of power and 450Nm of torque.

This is mated to a single-speed transaxle with drive sent through an all-wheel drive system.
