Almost two years after being unveiled in the US, the new Ford Mustang is being delivered to local customers.

CarExpert understands the first 2024 Ford Mustang ‘S650’ deliveries were made in the last weekend of July, though prototype examples have been in Australia since late 2023 for local evaluation.

Unveiled at the Detroit motor show in September 2022, the seventh-generation Ford Mustang began arriving at US dealers in mid-2023, and was due to arrive in Australia from late 2023.

However, its local launch was subsequently delayed to the first quarter of 2024 (January to March), then the second quarter (April to June) before being moved to the second half of 2024, which was announced in February this year.

The Mustang’s arrival also comes 10 months since orders opened in October last year.

Prices start from $64,990 before on-roads in EcoBoost Fastback automatic guise, or $77,002 before on-road costs for the manual-equipped GT Fastback – with an extra $3900 for the auto.

A limited run of the flagship Mustang Dark Horse variant – 1000 examples to be exact – will also come to Australia, starting at $99,102 before on-road roads with a six-speed manual or $103,002 for the 10-speed automatic.

There’s also a single convertible, the GT automatic, priced at $86,752 before on-roads.

Powering the entry-level Mustang EcoBoost is a turbocharged 2.3-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 232kW of power and 475Nm of torque – down 4kW but up 27Nm on its predecessor – and mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Mustang GTs feature a 5.0-litre V8 engine, now producing 347kW and 550Nm (up 8kW but down 6Nm), which drives the rear wheels through either a six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic transmission.

The Mustang Dark Horse gets a power bump to 349kW but loses 2Nm, also offered with a 10-speed auto or a heavier-duty Tremec six-speed manual.

The new Mustang’s arrival comes 17 months after the new-generation Mustang made its debut in the Supercars Championship, the first racing category in the world to feature the new model.

In its 44 championship races to date, the Ford Mustang has scored just 12 victories, however its first year of competition was marred by ongoing ‘parity’ debates between Ford and Chevrolet, with claims that the latter’s Camaro was a much faster car.
