Mercedes-Benz Australia has introduced a new limited-edition version of its GLA crossover with a drive-away price tag that undercuts that of the existing base model.

Orders for the Mercedes-Benz GLA 200 City Edition have now opened at dealers.

For those who order a GLA 200 City Edition before September 20, it’s priced at $66,900 drive-away. For context, the current entry-level GLA 200 starts at $68,900 before on-road costs.

After September 20, the GLA 200 City Edition will be priced from $63,900 before on-roads. That’s still $5000 more affordable than the GLA 200.

Power in the GLA 200 City Edition comes from a 1.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 120kW of power and 270Nm of torque.

This is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with drive sent through the front wheels only.

The GLA 200 City Edition is differentiated externally from the standard GLA 200 with a higher ride height and model-specific 18-inch alloy wheels.

It also has the ‘Progessive Line’ exterior styling, which includes chrome highlights on the front fascia, rear lower bumper and exhaust outlets. There are low-profile aluminium roof rails, too.

Like the regular GLA 200 it has LED headlights with auto high-beam, a panoramic glass sunroof, a power tailgate, and auto-dimming side mirrors.

Inside, the City Edition comes standard with the following equipment:

    • 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster
    • 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system
    • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
    • Satellite navigation with live traffic
    • Wireless phone charger
    • Dual-zone climate control
    • 64-colour interior ambient lighting
    • Proximity entry with push-button start
    • Auto-dimming rear-view mirror

    Standard safety equipment includes:

    • Autonomous emergency braking
    • Blind-spot assist
    • Lane-keep assist
    • Adaptive cruise control
    • Traffic sign assist
    • Surround-view camera
    • Active Parking Assist
    • Emergency Call system
    • Tyre pressure monitoring

There are also a total of nine airbags.
