The 2024 Volkswagen Touareg is finally receiving the R treatment Down Under.
The Volkswagen Touareg R will be priced from $129,990 before on-road costs when it arrives in March next year, with details of the wider facelifted Touareg line-up to be confirmed.
It’s Volkswagen’s first plug-in hybrid in Australia, and it’s expected more are to come – however, VW Australia is yet to confirm if the Golf or Tiguan will add plug-in hybrid variants in Australia when updated models arrive in 2024-25.
The 2024 Volkswagen Touareg R features a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 plug-in hybrid drivetrain with system outputs of 340kW and 700Nm, good for a 5.1-second dash from 0-100km/h. VW also quotes an electric driving range of 51km.
Plug-in hybrid rivals for the Touareg R eHybrid in Australia include the related Audi Q8 60 TFSI e and Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid, as well as the Range Rover Sport PHEV and Volvo XC90 Recharge.

Drivetrains
The Touareg R features a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 petrol engine making 250kW of power and 450Nm of torque, teamed with a 100kW/400Nm electric motor, an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
System outputs are 340kW and 700Nm, good for a 0-100km/h time of 5.1 seconds. Top speed in electric mode is 135km/h.
There’s a 14.3kWh lithium-ion battery feeding the electric motor. Volkswagen claims the Touareg R has an all-electric range of 51km based on the WLTP combined cycle.
When drivers use the kickdown function it will always activate the V6 turbocharged engine.
Efficiency
Volkswagen Australia claims combined fuel consumption of 3.3L/100km.
As noted earlier, the Touareg R is capable of driving up to 51 kilometres on electric power alone.
Unlike some newer PHEV models, the Touareg R only offers AC charging via a Type 2 charge port. Volkswagen hasn’t yet detailed charge capacity or timing as yet.
Dimensions
Volkswagen Australia hasn’t disclosed any dimensions for the Touareg R.
The R retains the 3.5-tonne braked towing capacity of the wider Touareg engine line-up.
Servicing and Warranty
All brand-new Volkswagen Australia models are covered by a five year unlimited-kilometre warranty which includes one year of roadside assist.
The brand has yet to confirm warranty cover for the high-voltage battery and electric motor. Service pricing for the Touareg R haven’t also been detailed as yet.
Safety
The Volkswagen Touareg has a five-star ANCAP rating based on Euro NCAP testing conducted in 2018 – while the Touareg R isn’t explicitly included in the ANCAP rating, PHEV models are included in the Euro NCAP score.
It received an adult occupant protection score of 89 per cent, child occupant protection score of 88 per cent, vulnerable road user protection score of 72 per cent and a safety assist score of 78 per cent.
