The Audi Q5 will once again be offered in sleeker Sportback coupe SUV guise with its new generation, giving the four-ring brand a rival to the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe.

Following the reveal of the next-generation Q5 and more powerful SQ5 in September, Audi has now revealed Sportback versions of these models.

Audi Australia says it anticipates the Sportback models will land in late 2025, shortly after the regular Q5 and SQ5.

As with the outgoing Q5 and SQ5 Sportback, the new models feature a sleeker roofline and more rakish tailgate than their more traditional SUV counterparts.

They also feature prominent shoulders like the regular Q5 and SQ5, but with a more defined crease across the tailgate and a belt line that curves up more prominently at the rear.

The sleeker shape does eat into boot space somewhat. Audi claims 515L of luggage capacity in the Q5 Sportback and 470L in the SQ5 Sportback, expanding to 1415L and 1388L respectively.

However, the regular Q5 has up to 1473L of boot space.

While Audi Australia hasn’t confirmed the local lineup, in Europe the Q5 Sportback will be offered with both ‘exterior advanced’ and S line guises.

The latter brings larger front air intakes and a sportier rear diffuser, among other aesthetic tweaks, while the SQ5 has unique exterior touches of its own.

Inside, the Sportbacks are essentially unchanged from the regular Q5 and SQ5.

An 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.5-inch infotainment touchscreen sit within one wraparound assembly, while a passenger display is also available.

The new-generation Q5 family ditches traditional climate buttons and knobs for on-screen controls, while the traditional gear shifter has been replaced with a push-button panel that also houses the electric parking brake switch.

Audi has also applied what it calls a Softwrap, trim that extends from the doors, across the dashboard, and down to the centre console. Sustainable materials like Dinamica microfibre are available, primarily made from recycled polyester.

All Q5s – like the new A5 family – ride on Audi’s new Premium Platform Combustion.

All models also use a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. That includes the SQ5, which previously used an eight-speed torque-converter automatic.

They also all feature what Audi calls MHEV plus technology, a 48V mild-hybrid system that’s capable of “limited” all-electric manoeuvring and parking and which can run the electric air-conditioning compressor.

The system features a powertrain generator generating up to 18kW and 230Nm, as well as a 1.7kWh lithium-ion battery.

The following powertrains will be available from launch in Europe:

Audi claims a towing capacity of up to 2400kg.

Additional powertrains will follow, including plug-in hybrids.

While Audi hasn’t gone into much detail about the new Sportbacks, it has previously confirmed the regular Q5 will ride on steel springs with passive dampers as standard. Optional is an air suspension setup with adaptive dampers.

Audi Australia currently offers a similarly large range of Sportback models as it does of the regular Q5/SQ5, though you can only get the coupe SUVs with all-wheel drive.

The outgoing range opens at $90,483 for the Q5 Sportback 40 TDI quattro S line.
