The updated Honda Civic is getting a tech upgrade and a new entry-level hybrid option in Australia, but it has come at the expense of the current entry-level petrol option.

The refreshed model is “arriving soon”, with no launch timing provided. The outgoing model is now in runout.

Honda Australia is calling the Civic its second model to have a 100 per cent hybrid lineup after the Accord. No, the Type R isn’t dead, Honda just counts that as a separate vehicle.

The existing e:HEV LX will be joined by a new e:HEV L model, and both variants will feature the latest generation of Honda Connect, encompassing expanded remote services and upgraded infotainment with Google built-in.

The latter allows you to use embedded Google apps on the 9.0-inch touchscreen such as Google Assistant and Google Maps, as well as download more applications through the Google Play Store.

Honda says its second generation of connected services includes a remote engine immobiliser and a Digital Key, allowing you to use your smartphone as a key.

That’s in addition to existing features like the ability to remotely control the locks, air-conditioning and lights and to set speed and geofencing alerts.

The updated Civic is distinguished by a new front bumper and grille, while there are new Seabed Blue pearlescent and Sonic Grey pearlescent finishes.

The latter is exclusive to the e:HEV LX. Both models are also available in carryover Premium Crystal Red metallic and Platinum White pearlescent finishes.

Honda will continue to back the Civic with a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, five years of premium roadside assistance, and five scheduled services capped at $199 each.

It hasn’t specified any powertrain changes, which means a carryover 2.0-litre four-cylinder hybrid powertrain featuring two electric motors, a lithium-ion battery, and an e-CVT – with system outputs of 135kW and 315Nm.

The company hasn’t confirmed pricing for the updated Civic, but the e:HEV LX is currently priced at $55,000 drive-away, while the moribund VTi LX is $47,200 drive-away.

It also hasn’t specified what features the e:HEV L will lose to come in under the e:HEV LX on price.

The e:HEV LX currently offers even more kit than the VTi LX, including a panoramic sunroof, 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, heated steering wheel, and leather upholstery.

In Japan, the updated Civic e:HEV range is also offered in two variants – e:HEV LX and e:HEV EX – with only the pricier e:HEV EX featuring the panoramic sunroof.

The top-spec Civic also offers an active cornering function for its LED headlights, power-adjustable front seats and a wireless phone charger over the entry-level model.

The Japanese-market Civic also gained a new grey interior option with this update, while the autonomous emergency braking system now can detect cyclists and motorcyclists when turning right at an intersection.

Honda has also introduced a sportier Civic RS in Japan, which is offered exclusively with the turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine and a six-speed manual transmission.

It features not only sportier exterior touches, but also a unique suspension tune and larger front brake disc rotors.
