Despite an imminent facelift, the Kia Sportage is selling better than ever before in Australia.
Over 16,000 examples have left showrooms in 2024, and there’s little to suggest that demand for Kia’s top volume product will slow down anytime soon.
In fact, the introduction of hybrid power earlier this year could see the Sportage’s following expand further.
However, with the addition of HEV models, potential buyers now face decision paralysis when choosing between the 12 Sportage variants.
So, let’s break down the current Sportage lineup and identify the sweet spots in the range, from family workhorses to luxurious hybrid commuters.

Lifecycle
The Kia Sportage has been in production for nearly 30 years, while the current fifth-generation launched back in 2021.
Four trim levels were available from launch – S, SX, SX+ and GT-Line – offered with a choice of three powertrains. In March 2024, hybrid versions of the SX and GT-Line were added to the range.
A mid-life facelift is right around the corner, due here in the second quarter of 2025. Camouflaged prototypes have been spied testing, revealing the mid-sized SUV will adopt Kia’s new sharp-edged exterior design language.
Interior updates are also expected, including revisions to the climate control system and digital displays in line with Kia’s latest models.
It’s not yet known whether there will be any changes to the Sportage’s powertrain offerings.

Competitors
You’ll struggle to find a more competitive segment in Australia than the mid-sized SUV category, with more than 20 models available under $60,000.
The Kia Sportage sits third in the sales pecking order, behind the ever-popular Toyota RAV4 and Mitsubishi Outlander.
Other direct rivals include the Mazda CX-5, Hyundai Tucson, and Nissan X-Trail. In the electric vehicle (EV) space, the Tesla Model Y, Chery Omoda E5 and BYD Atto 3 are available at similar price points.
You could even cross-shop the Sportage with European-badged alternatives such as the Volkswagen Tiguan, Cupra Ateca, Skoda Karoq, and Renault Koleos.

Sales data
The Sportage is easily Kia’s best seller in Australia, with a total of 16,095 sold this year to the end of September.
That ranks the Sportage fourth for mid-sized SUV sales over the first nine months of 2024, behind the RAV4, Outlander and CX-5. It was also the seventh best-selling vehicle in the country last month.
It’s been a big year for Kia’s most popular model – deliveries have increased by 45 per cent when compared to the same period last year.

Buying a Kia Sportage
The Kia Sportage range is among the more complicated in the mid-sized SUV segments, with more than a dozen different permutations.
Twelve variants span a $22,000 price range, so it pays for buyers to choose a Sportage that suits their needs.
School run specials
Family SUVs that rarely leave the suburbs are best kept simple and functional.
With that in mind, all-wheel drive adds unnecessary complexity and cost, so I’m happy to look past variants featuring that drivetrain layout.
Of the six front-wheel drive versions, the Sportage SX HEV arguably offers the best value. For $45,950 before on-road costs you get an efficient hybrid powertrain, 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and satellite navigation, all ensuring breezy urban travel.
Sure, you could step up to the GT-Line HEV, but it’s hard to justify the $10,000 premium.

Comfortable commuters
Want something truly plush for the daily grind? The flagship GT-Line in diesel form could be the pick of the range.
Starting at $52,920, the variant in question packs the most punch of any Sportage with 416Nm of torque, while also offering a comprehensive suite of mod cons.
The list of standard equipment includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, leather seats with memory, heating and ventilation, wireless phone charging, ambient interior lighting, and a panoramic sunroof.
In terms of driveability, the eight-speed automatic fitted to the diesel-powered GT-Line is smoother than the DCT transmission found in turbocharged petrol versions.
To top it all off, the diesel range-topper is equipped with all-wheel drive, offering superior traction when the road gets slippery compared to the more expensive hybrid.

All-rounders
Many Australian families need their SUV to be a do-everything vehicle, and that includes weekend excursions in the great outdoors.
All-wheel drive is therefore a necessity, as are family-friendly features that make life a little easier for kids in the back seats.
A base Sportage S 2.0D AWD will do the job in this regard, but the SX+ adds plenty of worthwhile goodies to the package.
Whether buyers can justify the $7000 price difference will most likely come down to budget constraints.
