ACT Police officers have nabbed a second high-range drink driver within a month, after an Audi RSQ3 driver allegedly returned a blood-alcohol test result almost eight times higher than the legal limit.

Just after 10am on Saturday June 10, the RSQ3 driver allegedly crashed and left the road on Melrose Drive in Hughes.

The 55-year-old male driver remained at the scene and was transferred to hospital after ACT Policing officers believed him to be heavily intoxicated.

A blood sample taken from the driver allegedly returned a result of 0.392 blood-alcohol concentration – almost eight times above the 0.05 limit for fully licensed drivers.

The man’s licence was immediately suspended and he has been summoned to court to face a high range drink driving charge at a yet-to-be determined date.

In the ACT, a Level 4 drink driving offence (with a BAC of 0.15 or above) can carry a fine of up to $2400, a six-month driving disqualification and even nine months’ imprisonment.

Earlier this month, another 36-year old Canberran returned a BAC of 0.443 following a breath test, a level described by ACT Policing as “near fatal”.

The man was issued with a 90-day suspension notice and will face court at a date to be determined.
