Honda Australia now offers the second-longest vehicle warranty in Australia, but as with Mitsubishi’s market-leading offering there’s a caveat.
Quietly introduced on June 4, the new Honda Extend program offers owners of vehicles still in warranty and serviced to their scheduled intervals the ability to extend their warranty and roadside assistance coverage to eight years.
This means the current Honda Australia model lineup of CR-V, ZR-V, HR-V, Civic and Accord are eligible, as are any vehicles sold within the past five years – the brand’s standard warranty coverage – which have been serviced on time at a Honda service centre.
Honda recently offered seven- and eight-year warranty and roadside assistance packages for select vehicles, and those with seven-year warranties can be bumped up to eight years of coverage with the new program.
If a vehicle misses its scheduled service within the first five years – or the subsequent years of extension – it won’t be eligible for the full eight-year coverage.
In May, Honda Australia director Carolyn McMahon said there were no plans to make either the seven- or eight-year warranty offers permanent. The new Extend program is classified as conditional coverage.
Mitsubishi Australia adopted a similar strategy when it introduced its 10-year, 200,000km warranty and capped-price servicing program in September 2020, which also requires owners to service their vehicles on time to extend their standard five-year, 100,00km warranty.
This was submitted to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and subsequently allowed to stand by the watchdog in December 2020.
Honda’s Extend warranty and roadside assistance is able to be transferred from owner to owner, as it’s attached to the car.
Kia, GWM and MG remain the only top 20 best-selling brands which offer a standard seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty without requiring owners to service their vehicles at their own dealerships.
