SsangYong Australia is rebranding to KGM SsangYong Australia, bringing it in line with other markets around the globe.
Now known as KG Mobility in its home of South Korea, the carmaker’s Australian division is inheriting the KGM prefix but keeping SsangYong in its name, as well as retaining the familiar winged logo.
Australia is one of the last markets to adopt the KGM name, created after Korean industrial company KG Group acquired a 61 per cent stake in the company back in 2022.
However, Australia is one of the few markets to use combined KGM Ssangyong branding – a decision made to ensure ongoing brand recognition. In most markets, the manufacturer is now known simply as KG Mobility, or KGM.

“We have decided to go for a new name to fully utilise the strength of SsangYong Motor,” said SsangYong and KG Group chairman Kwak Jae-sun in December 2022.
“Under the name of SsangYong, the company has a fandom but also has a painful image.”
The launch of the new name coincides with the introduction of the new Torres SUV, which goes on sale in October.
SsangYong has been a fixture in the Australian automotive scene since the mid-1990s, operating as a factory owned and backed operation since 2019, with a national headquarters and parts distribution centre in Melbourne.
The KGM Australia SsangYong range includes the Musso ute and Rexton seven-seat large SUV, as well as the mid-sized Korando crossover.
The petrol-powered Torres will be joined by the electric Torres EVX later this year, which will be the brand’s first electric vehicle (EV) in Australia.
