Mercedes-AMG is perhaps best known for its souped-up, V8-powered versions of Mercedes-Benz products, but it’s about to reveal something decidedly different.
Mercedes-Benz chief design officer Gorden Wagener has teased the electric Vision AMG, which appears to be a bespoke electric sports car.
Wagener uploaded a single teaser image to his Instagram, confirming it’ll be revealed on May 19.
Auto Express reports word from Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius, speaking at the Financial Times’ Future of the Car Summit, that the Vision AMG concept points to a production vehicle to become available in the second half of the decade.
“Next week, we will show what we think the electric performance world will look like when it’s made by AMG,” said Källenius.
“That’s hot off the press for you today, so stay tuned for some announcements that we will make next week. We will give you a glimpse of AMG performance as all-electric.”
Källenius confirmed the vehicle uses a “fully dedicated electric architecture from the ground up”.
The Vision AMG appears to be a two-door coupe and its silhouette is dramatically curved, with prominent hips.
Notably, the bonnet appears quite short, and the silhouette is more reminiscent of a mid-engined supercar than a front-engined one – there’s no exaggeratedly long bonnet like Mercedes-AMG’s GT – but, of course, there’s no engine here.
How indicative the Vision AMG will be of a production model is unclear.

The Mercedes-Benz Vision EQS concept did preview the production EQS, but most Mercedes concepts with the Vision prefix – the AMG Vision Gran Turismo and the Vision Van, to name a couple – may only preview certain design elements.

Källenius’ remarks, however, point to a bespoke electric flagship for the Mercedes-AMG brand.
Mercedes-Benz is spending €40 billion ($64 billion) between 2022 and 2030 on EV technology, platforms, and vehicle development as it plans to go EV-only “by the end of the decade, where market conditions allow”.
Last year it announced three dedicated EV architectures: MB.EA, for medium to large vehicles; AMG.EA for performance cars; and VAN.EA for, naturally, vans.
All platforms introduced after 2025 will be EV-only.
The Vision AMG isn’t the first electric Mercedes-AMG or even the first electric Mercedes-AMG sports car.
Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive
AMG 53 versions of both the Mercedes-Benz EQE and EQS have been revealed, with both locked in for an Australian launch. The EQS is expected to appear first, with a launch set for this year.
Before the boffins at Affalterbach got their hands on the EQE and EQS, however, they created what was the first electric Mercedes-badged product: the SLS AMG Electric Drive.
Revealed at the 2012 Paris motor show, the Electric Drive replaced the standard SLS’ 6.2-litre V8 with a quad-motor electric powertrain and a 60kWh battery.
Fewer than a hundred units were reportedly built.
Mercedes-AMG One
Before any production version of the Vision AMG arrives, Mercedes-AMG should be introducing the long-delayed One hypercar.
It’ll be powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 hybrid system based on the powertrain fitted to Lewis Hamilton’s Formula 1 racer, with total system power of 735kW.
The most recent word from Mercedes-AMG late last year was that the One would finally enter production during 2022.
