Mitsubishi in Japan has teased an updated version of its Outlander Plug-In Hybrid EV, which is set to get a bigger battery.

The company says the larger-capacity battery will bring an increase in electric range as well as more responsive performance, however it hasn’t disclosed range figures.

Mitsubishi says the petrol engine won’t fire as frequently, giving the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) a more EV-like feel.

Engineers have also retuned the suspension and electric power steering based on customer feedback, yielding what it claims to be greater ride comfort and steering feel.

The updated Outlander PHEV will go on sale in Japan in the northern autumn (September-November 2024).

While it would appear likely these changes would also filter through to export models, Mitsubishi Motors Australia hasn’t confirmed launch timing for the updated model locally.

Additionally, the updated Outlander PHEV will gain available ventilated front seats, Aniline leather upholstery, and a 12-speaker Yamaha sound system.

Mitsubishi says it has redesigned the doors “to provide the best acoustic space”, according to its translated press release.

The infotainment touchscreen has grown from 9.0 inches to 12.3 inches.

There’s a new exterior colour – Moonstone Grey metallic – plus new six-spoke 20-inch alloy wheels, however no other exterior changes have been detailed.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is Australia’s best-selling PHEV, with 2422 sold during the first half of 2024. That equates to 16.8 per cent of total Outlander sales.

However, it has a new rival in the shape of the BYD Sealion 6. Despite only launching in June, already 482 examples have been sold.

The Outlander PHEV will also square off against a new-generation MG HS in 2025.
