Ram is currently lagging behind rival North American legacy brands in terms of revealing a production-ready electric pickup, but a concept is now just around the corner.
Ram Trucks CEO Mike Koval Jr. recently confirmed in an interview with Detroit Free Press that the company plans to reveal its Revolution EV concept a night before the LA motor show starts in November.
If this proves to be correct, the reveal for the Ram Revolution concept will be on November 17, 2022.
Mr Koval went on to say the production version of the full-size electric pickup, which doesn’t have a name yet, will be revealed in 2023.
This all-electric pickup will be the Ram’s answer to the Ford F-150 Lightning, Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Hummer EV, Rivian R1T, and Tesla Cybertruck.
As previously reported, the production version of the Ram Revolution concept is due to go into production in 2024.
Exact details about this upcoming full-size electric pickup are few are far between, but what we do know is it will be built on Stellantis’ new STLA Frame body-on-frame architecture.
Ram has previously said vehicles on the STLA Frame architecture will feature 159kWh to 200kWh batteries and offer up to 800km of range.
The platform can also support electric motors with between 150kW and 330kW of power, which could mean 660kW dual-motor powertrains are on the menu.
In terms of rival competitors, the Ford F-150 Lightning offers up to 432kW and 482km of claimed range, the GMC Hummer EV produces 745kW and a claimed 529km of range in Edition 1 guise, and the Chevrolet Silverado EV will offer 495kW and 645km of range.
Mr Koval said the full-size pickup will “push past” its competitors and will still have the “core attributes” pickup truck customers want.
“More and more truck intenders are open-minded to the idea of electrification in their pickups, but they’re not willing to sacrifice our most core attributes that make a truck a truck, like towing, like hauling, and in the future, range and charge time,” said Mr Koval.
“In other words, ‘trucks still need to do truck things’ is the message that we’re receiving” through feedback to date.”
We already have an idea of what the Ram Revolution concept will look like thanks to a number of previous teaser images which show it’ll have a double-bubble roof.
In terms of where the production Ram full-size electric pickup will come to Australia, a spokesperson for local distributor Ateco said in April that it’s “working with our colleagues at Ram Trucks in the US, and are monitoring a number of vehicles that would suit the Australian market”.
In addition to the full-size electric pickup, Ram says it’s planning a “mid-sized” one too, closer in size to the likes of the Ford Ranger.
This will be based on the STLA Large architecture, which will also form the basis of the production Chrysler Airflow and production Dodge Charger Daytona SRT.
Ram has previously said it’s aiming to offer electric vehicles in the majority of the segments it competes in by 2025, with a full range of electric models to be offered no later than 2030.
This promise of a full range of EVs by 2030 suggests it’s not only working on the aforementioned mid- and full-sized electric pickups, but also EV counterparts to the rest of its model line-up.
Ram not only sells the 1500 and heavier-duty 2500 and 3500 pickups, which are all offered locally, but also offers the ProMaster City and ProMaster which are rebadged versions of the Fiat Doblo and Ducato vans.
The Ducato is already available with an electric powertrain in Europe.
