Toyota is recalling over 1700 examples of its Corolla and Corolla Cross due to a defective component that could cause a loss of steering.

“For involved vehicles, the steering system of the subject vehicles consists of a steering intermediate shaft assembly that connects the steering wheel to the steering rack,” the company says in its recall notice.

“There is a possibility that the upper universal joint on the steering intermediate shaft assembly was manufactured with cracks at a supplier.

“In this condition, the crack may grow over time due to stress created by steering inputs.

“If the crack grows, this can lead to abnormal noise, abnormal steering feel, and additional play in the steering wheel while turning.”

If these symptoms occur with your Corolla or Corolla Cross, Toyota says you should contact one of its dealers urgently to organise a free replacement of the steering intermediate shaft.

If the problem goes unaddressed, Toyota warns “the universal joint can break, causing a loss of steering and increasing the risk of a crash”.

    • The recall affects 1721 vehicles produced between July 18, 2023 and September 4, 2023
    • Affected vehicles include all Corolla Cross models, as well as all Corolla Hybrid sedan variants

Toyota says the fix will take approximately 45 minutes, however depending on your dealer’s work schedule you may need to make your vehicle available for a longer period of time.
