What would win in a street race between a 2003-05 Toyota Corolla Sportivo and a Mk8 Volkswagen Golf GTI?
The answer is neither, with the two P-plate drivers being the big losers in this unsanctioned competition.
According to a Facebook post from NSW Police Force’s Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, the two P1 licence holders were pulled over by Bankstown Highway Patrol officers late on Sunday, September 1 in a 60km/h zone.

Police allege the two drivers were estimated to be travelling at more than 100km/h, and were observed slowing, aligning with each other, honking their horns, and accelerating harshly.
In short, police say their behaviour was “consistent with a street race”.
Officers followed the drivers, who allegedly reached speeds in excess of 120km/h, before catching up with them and pulling them over.
The drivers were issued with Field Court Attendance notices and had their licences suspended until the matter could be heard in court.
Police say no vehicle sanctions were imposed as neither alleged offender was the registered owner of the vehicle they were driving.
While the Toyota Corolla Sportivo was a fairly punchy hatchback in its day, pumping out 141kW of power and 180Nm of torque from its 1.8-litre atmo four, it seems foolish to put it up against the much more powerful Mk8 Golf GTI… and that’s even setting aside the danger of racing on public streets.
The Golf GTI pumps out 180kW and 370Nm from a turbo 2.0-litre four.
It has a claimed 0-100km/h time of 6.3 seconds, a whole 2.1 seconds quicker than the Corolla Sportivo’s claim.
It’s possible the Corolla was modified… or the driver has an even more inflated sense of their driving abilities.
