About the BMW 6 Series
Marek M purchased this BMW 6 Series new with additional options for $115,000 (including all on-road costs). Marek M would buy this car again because: “The BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo (G32) is a very unique, comfortable and spacious car that BMW has offered in Australia between 2018 – 2020. It wasn’t the most successful BMW in Australia but it did make it feel the most special to own and drive.”
How reliable has your car been? Tell us about any issues.
The 6 is very reliable, and regularly serviced with the odometer going up to 156,000km currently.
The only issues I faced were the DRL yellowing on the left side (replaced light during warranty) and a year later on the right (when the warranty expired and had to pay a discounted price for the whole adaptive light unit around $1000) which leads me to the issue of the three-year warranty.
It’s great that BMW has moved on to five years. The last issue I had was the Bluetooth in the vehicle stopped working and was replaced by BMW at no cost. I had never had a recall with my 620d. Not had one issue with the engine however currently I’m in the process of replacing the motor for the front grill open and close function, this is showing a check engine light on the dash, my mechanic said it was due to emissions.
What do you think of the ownership experience with your car?
The ownership experience of the car was excellent, whenever I had service upcoming BMW would call me if I would like to go ahead and book with them. The car is very comfortable and looks beautiful.
One thing I noticed, because I have the front of a white 5 Series (G30) and I live in NSW, whenever I’m on the motorway or tunnel people want to move out of my way thinking you’re a BMW police car.
How has the purchase and aftercare experience been with your car?
When I took delivery and only had to wait four months for my car to arrive from Germany, I got PPF installed on the 6 to protect the white paint, this was a great decision and held up very well, although somebody panel areas such as the fuel cap and rear bumper had brown grime stuck on to the paint in the panel gap.
Overall the BMW’s interior with my upgraded Nappa seats in black has held up beautifully.
Are you happy with the price and features of your car?
For the price, I got this 6 Series and what value I had from it blew me away.
I was paying around 5 Series money for a car that was more comfortable with a wheelbase like 7 Series and boot space much larger than both.
The GT name really suits it with the sloping roof and the length of the car. Considering the 7 Series costs around $300,000 today just shocks me. But at the time in 2018, it was definitely the best purchase I made in that year.
What do you think of the performance and economy of your car?
The performance of the car isn’t the most exciting and I recommend a 630i or above if you want it to feel like a great BMW to drive.
The economy is around 9.0L/100km with my 620d. It’s a big vehicle and feels heavy to drive with the engine I have opted for. The driving dynamics is what you expect from BMW, my car is rear-wheel drive and handles very well.
What do you think of the technology in your car?
At the time BMW had the iDrive 6 in their cars which I hear is the best and least complicated system BMW has created. I was disappointed that Apple CarPlay wasn’t included, I have the option to pay $500 for it but instead, I coded it for $80 from my computer using the OBD port.
My car had a partial digital driver’s display, It has a full screen but it isn’t the full display seen on the M Sport package vehicles. The head-up display is very clear and easy to read.
There is also a small screen for the climate settings which was part of my Comfort package, not had any issues with it and adds to the technology of the car.
What do you think of the ride comfort and handling of your car?
The ride comfort is one of the reasons I choose the car in the begging, It might not have air suspension but it handles bumps and driving dynamics beautifully as a BMW should.
Because I have the Luxury Line I wasn’t going for performance but I was more focused on the interior passenger and driver comfort.
Do you have any additional comments about your car?
I have the first 620d In Australia and ordered the car before the engine was confirmed for Australia.
Some options I have chosen include Luxury Line (adds LED fog lights and Adaptive lights), Comfort Package (electronic sun shades, front and rear heated seats, four-zone climate control, hands-free tailgate) and upgraded Nappa leather seats (rear electronic backrest adjustment and head cushions).
You might notice the plates in the images are either HC0175 and HC36, these are so I can use the bus lane in Sydney because I am a self-employed limousine/chauffeur and own my own company.
I wrote a review on my current main vehicle the Audi e-tron on my profile you can read. The 6 series used to be my main vehicle alongside my X5 I bought at the same time as ordering the 6 series. When the e-tron arrived the X5 went and the 6 Series became my spare vehicle.
In a few months, the 6 GT will be replaced by my upcoming BMW iX that I have ordered and it’s on its way to Sydney, moving to fully electric.
The 6 Series may have been over for Australia but BMW’s partnership with the government and the Police Force is very strong.
I have spotted three BMW 620d Luxury Line in White 2022 LCI (Life Cycle Impulse or Facelift) used for government use (the LCI was never to be sold here for the public).
There has also been the choice of the 620d in 2020 for politicians using brown luxury line 620d as transport with the registration beginning with “ZZZ” in red on yellow NSW plates.
