About the Mitsubishi Triton
Kelleigh purchased this Mitsubishi Triton new with additional options for $46,775 (including all on-road costs). Kelleigh would buy this car again because: “The Triton has fulfilled all our needs. It was a long process to pick the vehicle from the large range of dual-cab utes now available. One of the first drives was a 1000km trip from Queensland to regional New South Wales. We finished our journey incredibly impressed with the comfort of the seating and the ride over the typical outback roads.”
How reliable has your car been? Tell us about any issues.
We bought the Triton in February 2019 with the intention to use it as a towing vehicle and to explore the great outback.
We had/have no intention to do extreme four-wheel driving. A vehicle to get us safely from point a to b with few to no limitations, whether it be dirt road or well-formed track. Not bush bashing.
The Triton has done all this and not missed a beat, no issues at all.
What do you think of the ownership experience with your car?
At the time the new MR Triton had an upgrade to the transmission going from 5sp auto to a 6sp auto. At the time I did think how much nicer it would have been with the 8sp Pajero transmission but not a deal breaker (the 5sp would have been a deal breaker).
One of the main reason we picked the Triton is a wide dealership network and so far the vehicle has been serviced in three states.
Very happy with all the services and one of the main purchase attractions was the fixed $299 service fee. It really did surprise me that a 4WD ute could be serviced at such a good price.
How has the purchase and aftercare experience been with your car?
I was lucky enough to buy the vehicle before the COVID price surge and managed to get a good discount.
The purchase experience was good and ended up with a good discount on the list price. I suspect they got some of that discount back when I opted to get ceramic paint protection, fabric protection and ceramic tint, which cost $2450.
We also got a factory tow bar fitted. 2019 now seems so long ago when dealers had lots of stock and were fighting for business. The dealer went out of his way to organise this in a professional manner.
Are you happy with the price and features of your car?
Value for money, well known brand, features were the main attractions.
Value, short of the Chinese brands the Triton was hands down the best priced and it was available. Mitsubishi is a known brand with dealerships through out the country, which was a consideration.
In regard to the features of the MR Triton we chose the GLS which was one down from the premium model but it was the model where the rear diff lock was a standard feature.
Over the years I have learnt the value of such a thing when needed and to have it factory fitted from new and thus covered under the original warranty was worth a couple of dollars extra.
Another feature that came in a this price point is the speed limiter on the cruise control. So instead of setting the cruise control at say 60km/h in a country town after doing 100km/h for the last 2 hrs plus so that you don’t accidentally speed.
The cruise control disengages every time you touch the brake and if you ‘resume’ it treats it like a race to get back to speed. The speed limiter does just that. You set the max speed and you drive normal with the car not exceeding the set speed (unless down hill which it beeps to warn you).
After purchase we fitted a canopy.
What do you think of the performance and economy of your car?
The vehicle currently gets between 8-10 litres per 100km which seems quite acceptable for a large 4WD ute. It’s no race car but the engine seems well suited to the vehicle. You certainly notice a difference when you have a full load on board, but for the price I am more than happy.
What do you think of the technology in your car?
One of the main reasons we purchased the Triton is it has what I believe to be is the best 4WD systems (I think Mitsubishi calls it Super Select) that enables it to run in constant 4WD which is a very reassuring thing to have, especially when you are traveling on a wide variety of road surfaces, sometimes towing a caravan.
One of the main reason we picked the Triton is that Mitsubishi has a long history of producing 4WD vehicles.
Whilst it might not have the latest infotainment features/touch screens that the Chinese brands have, I am confident in 10 years time everything will be working as well as the day I bought it.
What do you think of the ride comfort and handling of your car?
Like any other 4WD ute, the ride is a little bouncy when unladen. With a load on board, the handling settles down and is much improved.
Again the 4WD system which enables the vehicle to run in contact 4WD, give the vehicle a sure-footed feel when the road surfaces are less than optimal.
Do you have any additional comments about your car?
This is a car we plan to to use for the next 10 years+ and drive around Australia.
When we bought the vehicle, we could not justify the extra cost of the HiLux or Ranger and did not want to take risk on a Chinese ute, despite them being in some cases cheaper.
The heritage Mitsubishi has with Tritons and Pajeros over a long period of time gave us confidence this was the best vehicle for us. So far this has proved to be the case.
