About the Tesla Model Y
John Dwyer purchased this Tesla Model Y new for $105,000 (including all on-road costs). John Dwyer would buy this car again because: “I love the stereo, I love the quiet, I love the regenerative braking, I love the acceleration, I love the comfort, I love the control in the steering system but… I will go on to the next issue to explain my problems”
How reliable has your car been? Tell us about any issues.
The first issue I cannot keep the headlights off permanently when I have control. They always come on and I have to go back to the switch and turn the physical things off .
Worst of all when you are driving at night I put low beam on and they keep switching to high beam when it suits the car, not me.
When it is on Autopilot sometimes it doesn’t seem to know what it’s doing and suddenly the braking system will come on and scare me, and sometimes the wipers will just turn themselves on. Perhaps they just want to exercise. There’s no rain in sight but they just want to turn on occasionally out of the blue across the screen. They work.
And another thing like the touchscreen is great to a point, but if you’re on your own you have to take your eyes off the road to look at the screen to touch a stupid thing on the tablet.
Voice command does not listen to me and it does not understand my Aussie slang language.
The second complaint is the seatbelts they are so sunken into the seats kids have trouble trying to find where to plug them in. They to put them so low down in the seats the kids can’t even find them, so I have to get out of the car and look for them myself.
And I find it very annoying with the indicator on the opposite side of what we normally have in Australia.
One would probably say well why did you buy a Tesla? But it had so much to offer in a lot of other areas that most cars do not deliver. So am I a whinger, or just a normal guy expecting a little bit more out of the car?
What do you think of the ownership experience with your car?
I do love this car to a point, but I think I did enough complaining about it so I wouldn’t recommend the car to a prospective buyer – but I would also mention the pros and cons that come with it.
How has the purchase and aftercare experience been with your car?
After care experience what is that? I never got a call to say are you happy, nobody gave me any discount so how can I express my aftercare experience.
I think I have to wait until I break down and see if I get any assistance.
Are you happy with the price and features of your car?
I think the price would have been great except for the Australian Government took over $7000 just for the privilege, not including the rip-off registration.
I don’t want to sound like a compulsive winger but it does get a bit of a downside.
What do you think of the performance and economy of your car?
I cannot complain about the performance.
If anybody was to complain about the performance you have rocks in your head. Economy? Well if you get a performance model you got to be aware that it’s going to suck up more kilowatts so that is that accept it and shut up
What do you think of the technology in your car?
Oh here we go again. Technology, well I could take forever on this one but I won’t.
It needs to be improved dramatically. So many things need to be fixed as I said before, there’s a few issues with headlights switching on high and low when it suits itself and the wipers come on when it suits them to exercise their blades.
Put it in cruise control and sometimes it suddenly brakes for some unknown reason. And it’s not a car in front of me either.
Just it seems to be elevations of the road. And night time can be an issue as well I think my camera lenses need glasses having trouble visualising the road. And of course being annoying.
I like my knob and buttons – with knobs and buttons we can do things in the dark, but when you got a touchscreen? Take your eyes off the road and you’re going to be in trouble. Talk about people having mobile phones as distraction what are they call this one.
What do you think of the ride comfort and handling of your car?
Well if you buy a performance car you’ve got to expect it’s going to be hard on your ass and the road.
Otherwise you go and buy a gentleman’s car. Tesla Model Y Performance could be softer in the back but I’ve already complain enough about things that the moment
Do you have any additional comments about your car?
A great car. The concept is fantastic functionalities in some of the features need to be fixed badly.
I think the people who develop the software never owned a car, only played games I could be wrong but I’m sure they could do better.
I believe there is somebody developing buttons and control knobs via Bluetooth to fit in the Tesla clip underneath the screen to adjust all your features without looking at the screen. What a great idea that’s going to be – what happened to Tesla’s engineers and technicians that they missed out on this one or cutting corners?
