The seventh-generation Lexus ES has received some safety upgrades for 2021, bolstering the already well-equipped line-up. It’ll arrive from November.

In Australia, the Lexus ES continues to be exclusively available in 300h 2.5-litre hybrid form, though a 3.5-litre V6 petrol is offered overseas.

Key upgrades for the latest model include the introduction of blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic assist – which brakes the ES if an oncoming vehicle is sensed from behind – on the entry-level ES300h Luxury grade.

    Engines

The Lexus ES300h is powered by a 2.5-litre self-charging hybrid system, offering a combined power output of 160kW.

While Toyota and Lexus tend to not quote system torque figures for its hybrid models, the luxury brand says the 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine develops 221Nm on its own, while the e-motor contributes 202Nm.

Drive is sent to the front wheels via a hybrid-optimised e-CVT automatic transmission.

    Fuel Economy

Lexus Australia claims the ES300h will use 4.8L/100km on the combined cycle.

    Dimensions

The ES measures 4975mm long, 1865mm wide and 1445mm tall, with a 2870mm wheelbase.

In Luxury guise, the ES300h has a kerb weight of 1740kg.

    Total luggage space is 473L.

    Safety

The Lexus ES300h wears a five-star ANCAP safety rating achieved in 2018.

In terms of its individual category scores, the ES achieved 91 per cent for adult occupant protection, 86 per cent for child occupants, an impressive 90 per cent for vulnerable road users and 76 per cent for safety assist.

Dual frontal airbags, driver and passenger knee airbags, front and rear chest-protecting side airbags and head-protecting side airbags (curtains) are standard equipment.

All grades of autonomous emergency braking (City, Interurban and Vulnerable Road User), and lane keep assist (LKA) with lane departure warning (LDW), are standard on all variants as well.
