MG has released pricing for the entire MG 4 line-up, with the electric hatchback range opening at just under $39,000 before on-roads.
UPDATE 19/06/2023: MG has added a Excite variant to its line-up which has a smaller 51kWh battery. It’s mated to a single electric motor which produces up to 125kW of power and offers a claimed 350km of range on the WLTP cycle. See article for details.
The company had previously confirmed pricing only for the Essence spec with its 64kWh battery as pre-sales opened. This variant is priced at $47,990 before on-roads and offers 435km of range on the WLTP cycle.
It has now confirmed pricing for the base Excite (51), which uses a smaller 51kWh battery and costs $38,990 before on-roads.
The range is topped with an Essence variant using a 77kWh battery with 530km of range. This is priced at $55,990 before on-road costs.
A more powerful X-Power dual-motor all-wheel drive variant is “under strong consideration” to join the line-up closer to the MG 4’s launch in the second half of 2023.
Unlike the existing ZS EV, which uses a combustion-vehicle platform, the MG 4 sits on the brand’s new modular Scalable Platform which features rear-wheel drive and 50:50 weight distribution.
With a base price just under $39,000 before on-roads, the MG 4 is one of Australia’s cheapest electric vehicles.
The GWM Ora Standard Range hatch starts from $43,990 before on-road costs or between $44,490 and $47,891 drive-away, depending on the state.
MG’s own ZS EV Excite, which is soon to be discontinued, starts at $43,990 before on-roads or between $46,195 and $49,130 drive-away, again depending on the state.
All prices exclude on-road costs.
The MG 4 Excite 51 produces 125kW of power from a rear-mounted electric motor, teamed with a 51kWh battery, offering a claimed 0-100km/h time of 7.7 seconds.
The 2023 MG 4 produces 150kW of power with the 64kWh battery, with a claimed 0-100km/h time of 7.9s.
With the larger 77kWh battery, power is bumped up to 180kW while the claimed 0-100km/h time is under 7.0 seconds.
All models have a single-motor rear-wheel drive set-up, though a dual-motor all-wheel drive variant is under consideration.
Range for the 2023 MG 4 line-up on the stricter WLTP cycle is as follows:
The 51kWh battery can be charged using AC and DC charging. DC fast charging is capped at 88kW while a 6.6 kW AC charging speed is also available.
The 64kWh battery can be charged at up to 140kW using a DC charger. It will take a claimed 26 minutes to charge from 10 to 80 per cent at its maximum DC charging rate.
The MG 4 measures 4287mm long, 2060mm wide (including the mirrors) and 1504mm tall on a 2705mm wheelbase.
It has 363L of boot space, expanding to 1177L with the rear seats folded.
MG quotes a 500kg towing capacity for the MG 4.
All MG 4 models are backed by a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.
Service pricing has yet to be announced.
The MG 4 has yet to be tested by ANCAP, however its sister authority Euro NCAP gave it a five-star rating in 2022.
This was based on an adult occupant protection rating of 83 per cent, a child occupant protection rating of 80 per cent, a vulnerable road user protection rating of 75 per cent, and a safety assist rating of 78 per cent.
