MG’s next-generation HS plug-in hybrid isn’t due until 2025, but it’s set to offer considerably more electric driving range than the outgoing HS Plus EV.

CarExpert understands the next-generation HS PHEV is due here in mid-2025, and now Australian Government documents show the HS PHEV has been approved for sale.

While the documents are almost entirely absent of information, one line notes the petrol engine produces 105kW of power while total system output is 224kW.

MG recently confirmed the UK-spec HS PHEV will use a 105kW turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine mated with a 24.7kWh battery, for total system outputs of 226kW and 432Nm.

This indicates Australian-market models will feature the same powertrain, which appears to differ only modestly in terms of outputs from the system used in the Chinese-market Roewe D5X DMH, instead of the lower-range PHEV system found in the Chinese-market Roewe eRX5.

WLTP range in the new UK-spec HS PHEV is 121km, compared with the 63km figure of the outgoing HS Plus EV measured on the more lenient NEDC cycle.

The new car also features vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, allowing you to power appliances like in a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

Here’s how the outgoing HS Plus EV and UK-spec HS PHEV compare:

MG confirmed in July it had enough stock of the outgoing HS Plus EV to last it for the rest of 2024, with the old-shape model in runout.

With a mid-2025 launch, however, it would appear MG may be without a PHEV for a few months, which comes as BYD’s new Sealion 6 is surging up the sales charts.

To the end of September, BYD has sold 3207 examples, putting it just behind the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (4438 sales) and making it Australia’s second best-selling PHEV.
