After only four years on sale in Australia, MG’s largest vehicle in local showrooms has just entered its second generation, bringing with it more tech, improved safety features, and larger dimensions – as well as a higher price.

Now priced from $33,990 drive away, the MG HS is at least $4000 more expensive than it used to be, with price increases of $5000 and $7000 further up the range.

It retains the same basic engine and transmission setup as its predecessor, though power and torque outputs have been boosted alongside a switch to a wet dual-clutch transmission for smoother shifting.

The HS has received an all-new interior with dual 12.3-inch instrument cluster and infotainment displays, while the exterior wears MG’s current design language as seen on the new MG 3 and recently revealed MG ZS.

Size has also expanded, with a longer wheelbase housing extra boot space over the outgoing model. Its exterior is also adorned in aerodynamic elements like a new roof spoiler and diffuser, which MG says has reduced drag to provide an improved fuel economy rating.

It also now boasts a suite of safety technology, including advanced warning systems and driver assists. Driver comfort has been improved with the addition of further insulation and sound deadening around the cabin.

The new HS will initially be available in three variants, though there aren’t any major cosmetic or mechanical differences across the lineup – instead focused on interior comforts like heated seats and electric adjustment.

It’s due in Australia in the second half of this year, with hybrid versions to follow in the first half of 2025.

The previous HS was MG’s third-highest seller in 2023, with 8126 examples delivered. It ranked behind the ZS and MG 3 which achieved 29,258 and 15,430 deliveries, respectively.

To the end of July, MG has delivered 1863 examples of the HS in 2024, making it one of the less-popular models in the mid-size SUV market.
