Peugeot Australia has released preliminary details of the model year 2025 (MY25) 408 Fastback Hybrid, which unplugs the hybrid system for a $10,000 reduction compared to the outgoing plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version.

Due to arrive in the first quarter of next year, the 2025 Peugeot 408 GT Fastback Hybrid will remain a single, high-specification offering – with a couple of extra features thrown in for good measure.

It’s priced from $57,990 before on-road costs, which is a whole $10,000 less than the outgoing Plug-in Hybrid. The PHEV was priced from $67,990 plus on-roads before it was discontinued earlier this year.

A Peugeot Australia spokesperson confirmed with CarExpert an all-electric version of the high-riding fastback, the E-408, “forms part of our consideration for future product in the local market”.

It has stopped short of confirming when the E-408 might arrive Down Under.

    Powertrains and Efficiency

The 408 is no longer a plug-in hybrid in Australia, with the old 1.6-litre PHEV system subbed out for the company’s new 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder 48V hybrid drivetrain.

For reference, the outgoing 408 GT Fastback Plug-in Hybrid ran a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder plug-in hybrid system with total outputs of 165kW/360Nm, teamed with an eight-speed automatic.

In addition to claimed combined fuel use of just 1.5L/100km when starting with a charged battery, Peugeot also claimed the 408 PHEV could run for up to 60 kilometres in EV mode according to WLTP testing.

    Dimensions

Peugeot hasn’t detailed any changes to the 408’s exterior dimensions, though we’d wager there will be a change to kerb weight given the significant changes to drivetrain – exact figures are still to be confirmed.

    Safety

The Peugeot 408 doesn’t have an ANCAP rating, though sister firm Euro NCAP gave it a four-star safety rating in 2022 based off testing of the related 308 Hatch – Euro NCAP said the 408 has a “practically identical” structure.

In Euro NCAP testing, the 308 received an adult occupant protection rating of 76 per cent, a child occupant protection rating of 84 per cent, a vulnerable road user protection rating of 78 per cent, and a safety assist rating of 65 per cent.
