The Volkswagen ID. Buzz electric van range has been detailed and priced ahead of its arrival in December – and it’s more affordable than first expected.

The ID. Buzz passenger vehicle range was expected to begin in six-figure territory, but the brand has announced that the short-wheelbase five-seat model will instead start from less than $90,000 before on-road costs.

The business-ready ID. Buzz Cargo is also priced below $80,000 before on-road costs.

Those prices position the entry-level versions of the ID. Buzz under the Luxury Car Tax (LCT) threshold, meaning customers will be able to take advantage of the current Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) exemptions for electric vehicles (EVs).

The most affordable versions of the ID. Buzz range will arrive in Australia in December, and the GTX range-topper is due in the first quarter of 2025.

The ID. Buzz Cargo will be offered with a two- or three-seat layout, while the short-wheelbase (SWB) ID. Buzz Pro will have five seats, and the long-wheelbase versions will come with seven seats.

And unlike the 150kW/310Nm ID. Buzz we tested in Europe last year, the models Australia will get have seen a big power bump.

All models bar the GTX get a single rear-mounted electric motor with 210kW of power and 550Nm of torque.

The GTX upgrades to a dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain with 250kW.

The brand says it has received more than 7000 expressions of interest for its electric van range, and VW Australia commercial vehicles director Ryan Davies said that number is expected to grow on the back of this pricing announcement.

“Many Australians have a deep emotional and historical connection with Volkswagen vans and people movers,” said Mr Davies.

“We’re delighted to deliver the highly desirable BEV reinventions of those classics.

“Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ first fully electric range gives us a capability to supply families and fleets alike with a vehicle that has been highly anticipated,” he said, referring to the Cargo model as a “fleet manager’s friend” in light of the incoming NVES emissions targets.
