Volkswagen’s next-generation Multivan is set to launch in Australia in the first quarter of 2025, and it’ll be the most passenger car-like iteration of the people mover yet.

Unlike the existing Multivan, which is based on the same commercial vehicle platform as the T6.1 Transporter range, the new T7 model is based on the VW Group’s MQB Evo modular passenger car platform.

The move to a car platform is claimed to bring marked improvements to refinement, ride and handling, and also gives the Multivan better access to the electrification options that are compatible with the architecture which underpins the likes of the Golf and Tiguan.

The Transporter, meanwhile, will move to a commercial vehicle platform shared with the Ford Transit Custom.

With the new platform comes a highly configurable setup. The rear seats will come standard in a 2+2+3 configuration, though owners will be able to slide, remove and rotate the rear seats into a maximum of seven different configurations.

Volkswagen’s T7 Transporter will launch in Australia in only one diesel-only variant, though the brand has confirmed another engine option will be joining the range later next year. Details on that engine have not yet been revealed.

Pricing is yet to be confirmed too, though Volkswagen Australia says it’ll likely be priced similarly to the outgoing T6.1 Multivan.

Volkswagen is targeting the likes of the best-selling Kia Carnival with the next-generation Multivan, with the passenger car underpinnings expected to align it more closely against well-established options in the people mover segment.

    Pricing

Though Australian pricing is currently unknown, Volkswagen Australia says it’s unlikely to differ greatly from the outgoing generation.

The T6.1 Multivan range currently starts at $72,290 before on-roads and extends to $95,690 before on-roads. In the United Kingdom, where the T7 Multivan range is already on sale, pricing starts at £48,375 (A$93,444) and extends to £64,561 (A$124,710).

    Drivetrains

Only one engine will be available at launch, though Volkswagen Australia says another unspecified engine will join the line-up in 2025.

    In Europe, the Multivan is offered with a choice of two turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engines – a 100kW/220Nm 1.5-litre, and a 150kW/320Nm 2.0-litre – plus a plug-in hybrid.

The latter mates a turbo 1.4-litre four with an 85kW electric motor, 13kWh lithium-ion battery and a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, for 160kW of power in total and 50km of electric-only range.
