The new-generation Volkswagen Tiguan is on the horizon for Australia, with the local range to be headlined by a GTI-powered R-Line at launch.
Due in the first quarter of next year (January to March inclusive), the 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan will arrive in Australia led by a new, more powerful 195TSI R-Line flagship.
It’s also expected that an entry-level powertrain variant will be available at launch, with a mid-spec option arriving later.
VW Australia has confirmed the new Tiguan 195TSI R-Line will be priced above $60,000, though how far it will sit above the existing 162TSI R-Line’s $60,590 price point remains to be seen.
It’ll also be the first time in a while that the flagship Tiguan will be aligned with the European model’s outputs. The existing 162kW version of the brand’s 2.0 TSI petrol engine was replaced by a 180kW tune some time ago.
The new 195kW 2.0 TSI will align the new Tiguan with the facelifted Golf GTI and Skoda Octavia RS, and should offer a significant improvement in the claimed 0-100km/h time; the existing Tiguan 162TSI takes a claimed 7.0 seconds.
Replacements for the current 110kW 1.4 TSI and 132kW 2.0 TSI are also being finalised, though it’s unclear whether we’ll see a switch to the newer 110kW 1.5 eTSI mild-hybrid and 150kW 2.0 TSI confirmed for the European market.
VW Australia isn’t prioritising the new plug-in hybrid available in Europe, which quotes around 100km of WLTP-certified EV driving range.
It’s unclear whether pending Australian emissions regulations – the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) – will change this, and it’s understood the diesel option in the outgoing range won’t be renewed.
It’s unclear whether Volkswagen will offer a flagship R atop the new Tiguan range either, as a successor to the popular current flagship is yet to be officially confirmed.
The 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan moves the brand’s best-selling nameplate to the newer MQB evo architecture that already underpins the Mk8 Golf, bringing the latest technology the German brand has to offer.
Headlining the available features are new IQ.Light HD Matrix LED headlights which use 38,400 multipixel LEDs to better illuminate the road ahead; a new-generation infotainment interface with infotainment displays measuring up to 15 inches; a new adaptive damping system with available two-valve shockers; as well as new ergoActive Plus seats with pneumatic four-way lumbar adjustment and pneumatic 10-chamber pressure massage function.
There’s also a new a new ‘multifunction driving experience switch’, which is a console-mounted rotary control with its own mini OLED display that can be used to control the driving profile, radio volume or also the background lighting colours
