The overhauled T7-generation Volkswagen Transporter will arrive in Australia during the third quarter of 2025, offering battery electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and internal combustion diesel engine (ICE) options.
Speaking with media at the launch of the updated T-Cross SUV, Volkswagen Australia product and PR communications manager Daniel DeGasperi confirmed the new Transporter will offer a broad range of powertrains, much like the related Ford Transit Custom which has already arrived locally.
“The new-generation Transporter will be [in Australia] about this time next year, and we can confirm today it will be offered in ICE, BEV and PHEV,” Mr DeGasperi said.

Further details will be confirmed closer to the T7 Transporter’s arrival in the new year, but here’s what we already know.
Revealed earlier this month, the 2025 Volkswagen Transporter and Caravelle lineup will be offered globally with a wide range of turbo-diesel, plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains.
As noted earlier, it’s based on the same platform as the latest Ford Transit Custom, E-Transit Custom and Tourneo, as part of an ongoing commercial vehicle partnership between the two brands.
For context, the Blue Oval offers a version of the Volkswagen Caddy in Europe and the UK already, and already sells the Ranger-based Amarok ute in Australia.
A trio of four-cylinder diesels are available in 81kW, 110kW and 125kW tunes respectively, while the petrol-electric eHybrid PHEV is good for 171kW.
Electric versions are not yet available to order, but Volkswagen has confirmed three model grades with 100kW, 160kW and 210kW, all featuring a 64kWh battery pack. In Europe, the EV will be known as the eTransporter.
TDI and eHybrid PHEV models are front-wheel drive as standard, although 4Motion all-wheel drive is available for the 110kW and 125kW TDI variants. EV models on the other hand will be rear-wheel drive only, with an all-wheel drive version planned for future release.
If that wasn’t enough choice, Volkswagen also offers a variety of body styles including three Transporter variants (Kombi, panel van and dropside), as well as a Caravelle nine-seat people mover.
Also available as part of the T7 range is the PanAmericana, a rugged version designed for off-road expeditions. Offered in both the panel van and Caravelle people mover body styles, the PanAmericana features all-terrain exterior trims, grained bumpers and a painted radiator grille.
The PanAmericana treatment also extends to the interior, bringing stainless steel side-step inlays, gloss black dash trim, and chrome interior door handles.
The new-generation T7 Transporter van is 146mm longer and 128mm wider than its T6.1-generation predecessor, with an extended load compartment to match. An optional 400mm wheelbase extension is also available.
Vehicles with the normal wheelbase now have a stowage volume of 5.8m3, while long wheelbase and high roof examples will accommodate up to 9.0m3.
Maximum payload is up to 1.33 tonnes, and braked towing capacity has increased from 2500kg to 2800kg, depending on variant.
