Australia’s top road trip destinations have been revealed, showing that Aussies love a coastal road trip – but one destination may surprise you.

The recent survey, conducted by eBay Australia, found that despite cost of living pressures, three quarters of Australians are looking to do an iconic road trip within the next 12 months, with millennials being the most likely to hit the road.

Unsurprisingly, Australia’s top road trip destination was on the Great Ocean Road between Torquay and Allansford, with just under 30 per cent of respondents choosing this destination.

The survey suggests that the average Australian takes around four road trips per year with around half of those surveyed suggesting they enjoy exploring lesser known parts of Australia.

    DestinationRespondents
The Great Ocean Road (VIC): Torquay to Allansford27%
The Pacific Coast Touring Route (NSW & QLD): Sydney to Brisbane26%
The Great Barrier Reef Drive (QLD): Cairns to Cape Tribulation23%
The Grand Pacific Drive (NSW): Sydney to Sapphire Coast17%
The Great Eastern Drive (TAS): Hobart to Bay of Fires14%
The Red Centre Way Loop (NT): Alice Springs to Uluru12%
The Nullarbor Plain (WA & SA): Norseman to Ceduna11%
The Heritage Highway (TAS): Launceston to Hobart10%
The South West Edge (WA): Perth to Esperance10%
The Coral Coast Highway (WA): Perth to Exmouth10%

When Australians do decide to hit the road their preferred choice of vehicle is a caravan (with 29 per cent of respondents selecting this mode of transport), followed by camper vans at 18 per cent and motorhomes at 11 per cent.

According to eBay Australia, the most popular models saved in the company’s My Garage tool were the Toyota LandCruiser, Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger, which virtually mirrors the monthly VFACTS sales figures.

While most Australians (90 per cent) surveyed conducted safety checks before they left, only 68 per cent checked tyre pressures and just over half checked that lights were functioning. One concerning part of the survey was that only 54 per cent of respondents knew how to change a tyre.

According to CarExpert founder, Paul Maric, “Aussies love a good road trip, whether it’s a weekend getaway to your favourite camping spot or an iconic trip around Australia.

“While getting away can be heaps of fun, it can turn pretty sour if you’re not prepared. There are three simple steps you can take to ensure you’re ready for a longer road trip: check your tyres, check your vehicle weight limits and make sure your car’s had a recent service.

“And before you head off on your adventure, stock up on spare supplies like jumper cables, fuel containers, tyre repair kits and even a winch for those venturing off-road which can all be easily found on eBay in a few clicks. They’re all items that could be hard to come by if you’re exploring Australia.”
