BMW Group Australia has announced the sale of its company-owned dealership in Sydney to the Australian Motor Group.
Founded in 1989, BMW Sydney (and Mini Garage Sydney in Rushcutters Bay underwent a $65 million redevelopment in 2019. It’s the largest of BMW’s Australian dealer sites, with a total of 1950 new BMW and MINI cars and 1132 used cars sold in 2022.
The dealership has been sold to the Australian Motor Group for “an undisclosed price”, but given the size and significance we expect the figure is a very big one.
“As a leading and innovative premium automotive brand, BMW Group continuously analyses its business operations and has made a strategic decision to shift its focus away from owning a retail outlet in Sydney and to sell it to the Australian Motor Group, one of its dealers within its retail network,” BMW said in its media release.
BMW Group Australia adds it’s represented “by independent investors who collectively own 48 dealerships across Australia”.
The Australian Motor Group is a family-owned business with 25 dealerships nationally covering 13 brands. It already owns the Hornsby BMW dealership, which won the BMW Dealer of the Year Award in 2022 as well as the BMW Metro Dealer of the Year award in both 2021 and 2022.
BMW Group Australia says this “strategic move” will see the Sydney dealership come into new ownership by the end of this year, and will see the transfer of “all skilled dealership workforce to the Australian Motor Group”.
“The Australian Motor Group has a proven track record of excellence and their unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction and business innovation align seamlessly with BMW Group’s values,” said Wolfgang Buechel, CEO of BMW Group Australia.
“We are confident that under their stewardship, the dealership will continue to thrive, offering an exceptional working environment for staff and delivering high-quality service to our valued customers.”
