Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi will send its electric SU7 Ultra hyper-sedan into production early next year, CEO Lei Jun has confirmed.

First revealed last month, launch timing has now been set for the Porsche Taycan GT rival, set to arrive in Chinese showrooms throughout the first quarter of 2025, reports CnEVPost.

The SU7 Ultra is powered by three electric motors produce a combined 1138kW, sent to all four wheels.

However, buyers won’t be able to access the full potential of the Ultra until they pass a set of ‘exams’ programmed into the car, Mr Jun reportedly said in a product livestream.

Each Ultra will be delivered in ‘beginner mode’, requiring new owners to gradually unlock the full performance of the car.

Once the shackles come off, the SU7 Ultra can sprint from 0-100km/h in 1.97 seconds, 0-200km/h in 5.96 seconds, and continue on to a top speed of 350km/h.

Beyond ballistic straight-line speed, the track-focused SU7 Ultra tips the scales at 1900kg – relatively svelte for an EV – and comes with aerodynamic upgrades including a fixed rear wing, oversized rear diffuser, wheel arch cut-outs, and a front splitter.

Combined, its aerodynamic aids generate 2145kg of downforce at top speed.

With the SU7 Ultra, Xiaomi aims to set the lap record for a four-door EV around the Nürburgring, placing the Taycan Turbo GT’s seven-minute and 7.55-second lap in its sights.

The Tesla Model S Plaid also shapes up as a rival to the Ultra. The base SU7 sedan was Xiaomi’s automotive debut, after the Chinese electronics company made its name producing smartphones.

For now the SU7 is only available in China, although Xiaomi boasts a global presence including an Australian operation selling consumer electronics online.
