Cupra Australia, like most of the Volkswagen Group, is launching a bevy of new models in 2025.

    These will include a mix of all-new nameplates as well as updated versions of existing models, which will see the Spanish brand’s expand to seven distinct model lines, up from the current four.

    Cupra Tavascan: March-April 2025

    The brand’s second electric vehicle (EV) will land Down Under a little later than expected, with orders to open around March 2025 followed by deliveries commencing in April.

    Full pricing and specifications are still to be confirmed for Australia, but we do know there will be single-motor Endurance and dual-motor VZ grades, with the base price to start in the $60,000 bracket.

    Both versions will use a 77kWh lithium-ion battery pack, good for up to 534 kilometres of range in the Endurance RWD or 499 kilometres for the VZ AWD – both are rated on the WLTP combined cycle.

    Key rivals for the Tavascan will include the related Skoda Enyaq Coupe and soon the Volkswagen ID.5; as well as segment favourites like the Tesla Model Y and Kia EV6.

    Cupra Born VZ: April-May 2025

    If you thought the regular Born EV was a bit lukewarm for a hot hatch, the new Born VZ should add enough spice to make it a proper performance product.

    The Born VZ makes use of a more powerful 240kW/545Nm rear electric motor and a larger 79kWh battery pack – up 70kW and 235Nm on the standard Born variant in Australia.

    As a result, the Born VZ claims to hit 100km/h from standstill in 5.7 seconds on its way to a top speed of 200km/h. For reference, the 170kW Born e-Boost in Australia takes 7.0s to hit triple figures and tops out at 170km/h.

    External upgrades are limited to wider tyres and a choice of two 20-inch alloy wheel designs: either forged or with 3D copper inserts. Two new colours join the palette: Midnight Black and Dark Forest green.

    Inside, the VZ is ready for the racetrack with bucket seats finished in recycled materials. The tech has also been improved over the base car, with the fitting of an upsized 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen that features Cupra’s latest operating system.

    Cupra Leon hatch facelift: May-June 2025

    Spain’s take on the Volkswagen Golf will get a comprehensive update during the second quarter, with the hatchback arriving ahead of the Sportstourer wagon that will debut later in the year.

    Beyond design revisions and enhanced technology, the new Leon hatch will debut the VW Group’s 110kW 1.5 eTSI turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with 48V mild-hybrid tech – which according to overseas specifications will use less than 6.0L/100km on the WLTP combined cycle.

    Sitting above it in the range will be a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain: the 200kW 1.5 e-Hybrid with over 100 kilometres of electric driving range, courtesy of a larger 19.7kWh (net) battery pack compared to the current model.

    As before, the performance hero of the local Leon lineup will be the 221kW 2.0 TSI.

    Inside there’s a new 12.9-inch touchscreen atop the dashboard, complete with backlit touch sliders and an interface designed to make key functions easier to access. The available Beats audio system has also been subbed out for a new Sennheiser unit.

    Cupra Formentor facelift: May-June 2025

    Cupra’s best seller will be getting a similar update to the related Leon, scheduled to arrive around the same time during the second quarter of 2025.

    Headline changes include the brand’s new ‘shark face’ and tri-triangular LED lighting elements, as well as upgraded infotainment and new drivetrains.

    As with the Leon hatch, the new Formentor range in Australia will open with a 1.5 eTSI turbocharged mild-hybrid, and joined by the new 200kW e-Hybrid PHEV and a more powerful 245kW 2.0 TSI flagship with a torque-vectoring rear differential nicked from the new VW Golf R and Audi RS3.

    Cupra Leon Sportstourer: July-August 2025

    Cupra will finally bring the Sportstourer version of the Leon in 2025, arriving at the beginning of the third quarter.

    Unlike its hatchback sibling, however, the Leon Sportstourer will focus on the upper end of the market even though entry-level engines are available in overseas markets.

    Cupra Australia has indicated we can expect the Formentor’s 245kW 2.0 TSI with AWD and torque vectoring rear differential to fill the gap left by the now discontinued (in Australia) Volkswagen Golf R Wagon.

    The 200kW 1.5 e-Hybrid with over 100km of EV range is expected to lob Down Under as well.

    It’s otherwise similar fare to the Leon hatch and Formentor facelifts, with a revised design, enhanced interior trimmings, as well as the new 12.9-inch infotainment system with backlit touch sliders.

    Cupra Terramar: August-September 2025

    Cupra will have a proper crack at the top-selling mid-sized SUV segment with the Terramar from the third quarter of 2025.

    Effectively a more aggressive take on the new-generation Volkswagen Tiguan, the Terramar is a crucial new model for the Spanish brand and will serve as a flagship alongside the Tavascan EV.

    Cupra Australia’s head of product Jeff Shafer has indicated the Terramar will offer “three or four drivelines” when it arrives Down Under, certainly including the 200kW 1.5 e-Hybrid PHEV and all but confirming the new 195kW 2.0 TSI shared with the updated Volkswagen Golf GTI.

    A third is understood to be a 110kW 1.5 eTSI mild-hybrid as with the Leon and Formentor, which could see the Terramar start somewhere in the $50,000 bracket and putting it right in the heart of the segment dominated by the Toyota RAV4 and Mitsubishi Outlander.

    Measuring 4519mm long, 1863mm wide and 1584mm tall with a 2681mm wheelbase, the Terramar is almost identically sized to the new Tiguan which measures 4539mm long, 1842mm wide, and 1639mm tall on a 2680mm wheelbase.

    The height difference will be down to the Terramar’s standard sports suspension and slimline roof racks compared to the Tiguan.

    Despite playing in the same space as the older Ateca, Mr Shafer told CarExpert the brand is confident the two models appeal to different customers and will be sold concurrently for some time.
