Hyundai is recalling over 1700 examples of its recently introduced second-generation Kona as they pose a potential fire risk.

The recall affects only vehicles with the turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine.

“Due to a manufacturing defect, the bracket retaining the engine control unit could interfere with the vehicle’s wiring in the event of a collision, causing a short circuit resulting in a vehicle fire,” the company says in its recall notice.

“A vehicle fire can increase the risk of serious injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users and bystanders, and/or damage to property.”

    • A total of 1726 SX2-generation Konas are affected from 2023

If you own an affected vehicle, you’ll need to contact a Hyundai dealership to schedule an appointment for a free repair.

A technician will install a protective cover over the affected wiring.
