Nearly 14 years after the LFA first entered production, Lexus Australia says it’s keen for a new hypercar – even if official details aren’t yet known.
Despite going out of production in 2012, the LFA remains the pinnacle of Lexus engineering. Production was limited to 500 units, all powered by a bespoke 4.8-litre V10 engine co-developed by Yamaha which produced 412kW and 480Nm, propelling it from 0-100km/h in 3.7 seconds.
Only eight examples were brought to Australia by Lexus.
Speculation surrounding a new GT3-derived road-legal hypercar in development by either Toyota’s Gazoo Racing (GR) department or Lexus itself has sparked significant interest; not least from the brand’s Australian division which says it feels a “sense of excitement” about a new performance flagship.

With full details still up in the air, a Lexus Australia spokesperson expressed a keen interest in the new model – but stopped short of confirming its name.
“[LFR] is a speculated name for a future model, so we can’t comment on speculation, but there’s obviously a sense of excitement about what might happen with the next-generation high-performance car,” the spokesperson told CarExpert.
“We’ve got one at the moment, which is the LFA, which has become an icon. There is a strong expectation with the public [surrounding] what’s next, ‘when’s the successor going to come?’
“We’re just as excited to know … we’ve seen spy pictures, but we don’t know if those are spy pictures of a Lexus, or a Toyota; we don’t know. We just have to stay in anticipation for the moment.”
Rumoured to wear the LFR name, the new hypercar will reportedly powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 hybrid powertrain with between 515kW and 530kW of power, mated with an electric motor which could push total outputs as high as 662kW.
The LFR was spied testing in Europe in October this year, and its most recent sighting followed several previous instances of its racing GR GT3 counterpart being spotted on-track.
Spy photos have revealed the LFR will likely maintain the elongated bonnet seen on the GR GT3, as well as a Supra-like rear window design, along with a wide, aggressive stance.
It’s expected the LFR will debut in late 2025 and go on sale sometime in 2026.
