Almost half of Lexus’ sales in Australia are hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric so far in 2022.
Lexus Australia said 47.6 per cent of its overall sales this year were of vehicles with electrified powertrains, spearheaded by its new NX mid-size SUV.
That’s equal to 2133 of the 4473 units it has sold in Australia up to July 31.
Leading the charge (pun intended) is the supply-constrained Lexus NX, which has sold 1064 units across its NX350h hybrid and NX450h+ plug-in hybrid variations, representing 53 per cent of total NX sales YTD.

It’s also already overtaken 2021’s year-end NX Hybrid total (992 units).
Cumulative NX sales have now surpassed 25,000 units (25,382 as of July 31) in Australia since the nameplate first launched in 2014.
Elsewhere in the range, the RX has sold 379 units across RX450h and RX450hL variations, which is more than half (59 per cent) of 2021’s overall RX Hybrid figure of 640 units.
The brand’s first EV offering, the UX300e compact crossover, has accumulated a modest 55 sales this year with the brand claiming it has “strong orders on hand”.
Globally, Lexus plans to introduce “at least 20 new or renewed models” by 2025, “most of which will be electrified”.
The new-generation Lexus RX (due locally in 2023) and all-electric Lexus RZ (unconfirmed for Australia) are two of these vehicles, with the former to offer three different hybridised powertrains.
The company has previously told us it wants 80 per cent of its Australian sales by 2025 to come from cars running either hybrid, PHEV, or BEV drivetrains – making petrol-only offerings a sliver of its volume.
Elsewhere in the Lexus line-up, the ES, LC and LS all offer hybrid versions, as does the compact UX.
So far in 2022, Lexus Australia has sold 4473 units YTD, a 27.5 per cent reduction compared to the same period in 2021. The NX is by far its top seller, with 2019 units sold to the end of July (-1.4 per cent), with the RX (1004 units, -16.2 per cent) a distant second.
