The MG HS and GWM Haval H6 mid-sized SUVs have steadily been gaining traction on the sales charts, and last month the Chinese pair outsold a number of popular legacy nameplates within the medium SUV segment.
Returning 902 registrations in August, the MG HS saw growth of 226.8 per cent compared to the same month in 2021, and is up 76.4 per cent year-to-date (YTD) as of August 31.
More telling is the difference in market share, with the HS accounting for 6.5 per cent of the segment’s sales in August 2022, compared to just 2.2 per cent in August 2021 – essentially tripling its slice of the pie.
Likewise the GWM Haval H6, which with 858 registrations in August returned monthly growth of 48.7 per cent and earned a 6.2 per cent share of the segment’s sales. Year-to-date, the H6 is up an impressive 124.1 per cent.
Both sets of sales figures bettered several household names, including the Honda CR-V (781 units, +65.1 per cent), Nissan X-Trail (516, +30.0 per cent), Subaru Forester (580, -47.5 per cent) and the Volkswagen Tiguan (259, -54.2 per cent).
In fairness to those competitors, the X-Trail is between generations, while the Forester and Tiguan have been in short supply of late.
While the Chinese duo posted impressive sales growth in August, there’s still some way to go before they reach the volume of the segment’s sales leaders.
The Toyota RAV4 managed 2482 registrations for the month (-21.7 per cent) despite supply issues, and the Mazda CX-5 remained consistent with 2325 units (+3.8 per cent). Together the pair account for more than a third of the mid-sized SUV market.
Rounding out the top five were the Hyundai Tucson (1719 units, +47.0 per cent), Mitsubishi Outlander (1568 units, -4.3 per cent) and the Kia Sportage (1237 units, +93.3 per cent).
