In the same day Peugeot Australia announced 3008 pricing and the demise of the 508, it also announced significant changes to its powertrain strategy.

    That includes phasing out plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), delaying some key electric vehicle (EV) launches, and rolling out a new mild-hybrid powertrain across multiple model lines.

    Peugeot has confirmed new EVs now won’t launch until 2025 as the “electric vehicle landscape for passenger and SUV vehicles in Australia is rapidly evolving and dynamic”.

    “Although we’re not in a position to comment specifically on individual vehicles, the 100 per cent electric range is set to expand from 2025,” said a spokesperson for Peugeot Australia.

    It hasn’t provided any further detail on upcoming EVs, so it’s unclear if the same slate of vehicles is still planned, while we also don’t know exactly when during the year they’ll arrive.

    Upcoming EVs will join the existing E-Partner and E-Expert vans.

    The company updated its website today, removing pages for all EVs bar the vans.

    208

    The current Peugeot 208 first entered production in 2019 but it’s never been offered here.

    However, Peugeot confirmed last year the electric version – called the E-208 – would arrive here during 2024.

    As mentioned, Peugeot has now said it still plans to expand its EV lineup, but this won’t take place until 2025… and hasn’t confirmed what vehicles are coming.

    Last year, the E-208 was officially approved for sale by the Australian Government. A single variant appeared in approval documents with a 115kW electric motor and a 51kWh battery pack.

    In Europe, this configuration offers a claimed 400km of electric range.

    308

    Peugeot confirmed earlier this year that the electric E-308 would arrive during the second half of 2024. It’s another EV whose local launch has been moved to the TBA column.

    The company has, however, confirmed it axed the PHEV version of its small car. No stock remains of the GT Sport hatch, the only PHEV model offered. It accounted for just under a third of all 308 sales in the first half of this year.

    While the PHEV is going, Peugeot says the 308 will get the brand’s new 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder mild-hybrid powertrain during 2025.

    This produces 100kW of power and 230Nm of torque, with a 21kW/55Nm electric motor located within the six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

    408

    The 408 is currently offered here exclusively as a PHEV, but this powertrain is getting the axe in Australia. Only limited stock remains.

    Instead, the 408 will be offered exclusively with the new mild-hybrid powertrain.

    Due in 2025, the mild-hybrid 408 uses the same 1.2-litre turbo three-pot as in other Peugeots, with 100kW of power.

    508

    Peugeot has confirmed the 508 has been axed in Australia, and limited stock remains across the dealership network.

    The company has closed the door on bringing the facelifted model here, after initially appearing to express interest in offering it locally.

    2008

    Peugeot has confirmed the 2008 will get mild-hybrid power during 2025, with the same 100kW turbo 1.2-litre three-pot that’s being rolled out across multiple models.

    It’s unclear when the facelifted E-2008 will come here. It was revealed early in 2023, almost in tandem with the introduction of the pre-facelift E-2008 in Australia.

    Until yesterday, Peugeot Australia’s website said the updated electric SUV would arrive here in the first quarter of 2025. The vehicle now no longer appears on the local website.

    The updated E-2008 gets a more powerful 115kW electric motor (up 15kW) and a larger 54kWh battery (up from 50kWh), resulting in range of up to 406km on the WLTP cycle (up from 345km).

    Peugeot Australia famously cleared out pre-update examples of the electric SUV earlier this year with enormous discounts of upwards of $25,000.

    3008

    Pre-orders have opened for the new-generation 3008, ahead of customer deliveries commencing early in the first quarter of 2025.

    While a PHEV continues to be offered in Europe, this won’t be offered here. Instead, the 3008 will launch with the aforementioned 1.2-litre turbo three-pot mild-hybrid.

    Peugeot has previously confirmed the new electric E-3008 for our market, which was originally set to come here this year. It has now been moved into the TBA column too.

    The E-3008 offers a choice of front- or all-wheel drive and 73kWh or 98kWh batteries, with up to 700km of range when equipped with the larger battery and front-wheel drive.

    5008

    Peugeot has confirmed the 5008 will offer mild-hybrid power in Australia in 2025.

    That should coincide with the arrival of a new generation of the three-row 5008, already on sale in Europe.

    While the 5008 is Peugeot’s largest SUV, it’s offered in Europe with the same 100kW turbo 1.2-litre three-pot 48V mild-hybrid as other Peugeot models.

    Peugeot confirmed in March the electric E-5008 will come here during 2025, though it’s unclear if this is still the case.

    The electric SUV offers a choice of a 73kWh battery with 500km of WLTP range or a 98kWh battery with a claimed 660km.

    The single-motor 73kWh model has 157kW of power, while the dual-motor all-wheel drive packs 240kW. The 98kWh long-range battery is mated with a 170kW single electric motor.

    While a PHEV is offered in Europe, this appears unlikely for Australia as the company retires its PHEV options here.
