The Volkswagen T-Roc SUV sold in record numbers during May, helping drive strong sales for the brand in 2023.
To date this year Volkswagen sales have swollen 57.5 per cent, and in May they increased by close to 80 per cent relative to the same month in 2022.
The brand sat in ninth on the sales charts in May, ahead of Subaru and behind Tesla.
Volkswagen T-Roc
Leading that charge is the T-Roc. With 3360 deliveries to date according to VFACTS, and a record 921 in May alone, it’s the best-selling Volkswagen in Australia ahead of the larger Tiguan (2946 deliveries) and small T-Cross (2371).
The common theme among those three vehicles – and the Tiguan Allspace sitting behind them on the sales charts – is the fact they’re SUVs.
To date in 2023, a whopping 69.6 per cent of Volkswagen sales have been SUVs. The broader Australian market is 55.8 per cent SUVs.
Volkswagen Amarok
Although it’s not on the podium right now, the new Amarok ute is expected to duke it out with the T-Roc for top spot on the Volkswagen sales charts as supply improves.
At the other end of the spectrum, traditional Volkswagen best-sellers are living in the shadow of the now-dominant SUV range.
The Golf is sitting on 941 deliveries to date in 2023, while just 173 people have taken delivery of a Polo.
Volkswagen Golf
The swoopy Arteon liftback and wagon are sitting on a combined 300 deliveries, while the Passat and Passat Alltrack have found a combined 427 homes.
Strong backorder deliveries drove the Australian new vehicle market to an all-time May sales record and the best monthly result this year, with 105,694 new cars delivered.
This figure is up 12 per cent year-on-year (YoY), and has driven the market’s year-to-date (YTD) tally to 456,833 sales, up 4.3 per cent and the best status since 2018.
