The Xpeng G6 still doesn’t have a price tag in Australia, but local specs are now confirmed and pre-orders have opened for the Tesla Model Y-rivalling electric SUV.

TrueEV, the Australian importer, distributor and retailer of the Chinese brand, is now allowing customers to secure a G6 with a fully refundable $1000 deposit.

This will ensure “priority access” to the first examples bound for Australian customers in the fourth quarter of this year.

TrueEV has confirmed it’ll announce pricing of the G6 in September.

G6s will be available for pick up at delivery centres in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, with free home delivery “for most locations”.

The G6 will be offered in two variants in Australia, both with an 800V electric architecture.

The G6 measures 4753mm long, 1920mm wide and 1650mm tall on a 2890mm wheelbase – almost identical dimensionally to the Tesla Model Y.

It has 571L of storage space in the rear.

Xpeng was founded in 2014 in Guangzhou, China, and started production of its first vehicle – the G3 SUV – in 2018.

In addition to the G6, it also offers the larger G9 SUV, as well as the P5 and P7 sedans and the X9 people mover.

After initially selling vehicles only in China, it announced plans for the European market in 2020. Since then, it has been gradually expanding its presence on the continent.

In addition to Australia, it has also announced strategic partnerships across other countries in the Asia Pacific region including Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

“The number of brands that you see in the market, although there’s a few new ones, the total car sales for EVs are dominated by Tesla, with BYD second. There are a few new brands coming in, whether they’re all the same is to be seen,” TrueEV CEO Jason Clarke told CarExpert in May.

“But having researched 120 [brands of Chinese EVs] and a short list of only seven really good ones, I think we’ve landed on a great one. I put Xpeng at the top of the list of quality manufactured and designed EVs.

“I think there’s plenty of room for these vehicles in the marketplace when the EV penetration is so low. We think there’s going to be an explosion of EV sales. The choice hasn’t been great. The choice is about to get really good.”

Australian pricing hasn’t been announced for the G6, but Mr Clarke hinted it will start at less than $60,000 – potentially closer to $55,000 before on-roads.

The Tesla Model Y is now $55,900 before on-roads in base RWD guise after multiple price cuts.
