The next-generation BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe has been leaked ahead of its expected reveal sometime this year, with a major visual overhaul headlining the changes.
The new model was first spied in mid-2023, though the latest leak reveals overhauled looks that bring the model closer in line to the new 1 Series, which was formally revealed earlier this year.
Bimmerpost user ynguldyn, who claims to compile leaks from within BMW, has said the new 2 Series Gran Coupe will go into production in November 2024.
These leaked photos were posted to the CocheSpias forum, and the presence of Chinese badging suggests they come from a Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology filing.
These photos also show an ‘L’ tacked onto the end of the model name, suggesting the car featured is a long-wheelbase version for the Chinese market.
The design of the next-generation 2 Series Gran Coupe is a subtle evolution over the current version, with some of the sharper edges of the current car softened.
As with the new 1 Series, it appears the 2 Series Gran Coupe is a heavy overhaul of the current model rather than an all-new vehicle.
In addition to front and rear lighting closely resembling the new 1 Series, the new 2 Series Gran Coupe will feature a range of new wheel and grille designs. The diagonal bars on the new grille are reminiscent of those on the new X3.
No interior photos have been seen yet, though it’s expected to gain a version of the BMW Curved Display which features a digital instrument cluster and an infotainment touchscreen in one assembly.
As with the latest BMW products, the 2 Series Gran Coupe may also feature fewer buttons than the current model.
It’s expected the next-generation BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe will be built on an updated version of the current ULK2 platform, which underpins other BMW models like the 1 Series, 2 Series Active Tourer, X1, and X2.
That means it’ll likely continue to offer a choice of front- or all-wheel drive.
According to ynguldyn, the 2 Series Gran Coupe will ride the same 2670mm wheelbase as the current car and will also be 1800mm wide.
However, length will reportedly expand by 185mm to 4546mm, while the 2 Series Gran Coupe will be 14mm lower at 1445mm.
It’s unclear what BMW will fit under the bonnet, though we expect powertrains with 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance.
Australian versions of the current model are available with a choice of three turbocharged petrol engines, though there are turbo-diesel options available in other markets.
The current 218i is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine producing 103kW of power and 220Nm of torque. This is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
The current 220i is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 141kW and 280Nm, also mated with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
The flagship M235i xDrive has a more potent 2.0-litre with 225kW and 450Nm, and features an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Australian-specification versions of the current 2 Series Gran Coupe are front-wheel drive apart from the M235i, xDrive which has all-wheel drive.
The current-generation BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe was first revealed in 2019 and launched in Australia during 2020.
