Polestar’s local boss anticipates the brand’s new coupe-styled electric crossover will become its top-seller next year, despite the absence of a conventional windscreen at the rear of the mid-sized battery-powered SUV.

Speaking with CarExpert at the Australian media launch of the Polestar 4, the Sino-Swedish auto brand’s local managing director Scott Maynard said the size and price positioning of the carmaker’s answer to the popular Tesla Model Y should make it Polestar’s best-seller here.

“The Polestar 4 is such a compelling package with its style, level of equipment and its size – because it sits in that medium SUV segment, where’s it’s got access to such a broad base of consumers,” Mr Maynard said.

“We expect that it will probably leapfrog the [Polestar] 2 which, even though it’s got that huge rear door, still gets considered in the passenger car segment.

“So, [the 4] will access a large proportion of the new car market and be our number one seller, I would think.”

October 2024 was the first month of registrations for the Polestar 4, with 25 vehicles counted according to Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) figures.

These first vehicles are largely head office and dealer demo cars, with first customer deliveries not due to take place until early December.

For reference, the Polestar 2 has recorded 1379 registrations to the end of October this year, down 25 per cent on the same January-October period in 2023.

Available to order now, the 2025 Polestar 4 is priced from $78,500 plus on-road costs in Australia.

Two variants are available from launch, the Long range Single motor and the Long range Dual motor, both fed by a 100kWh (nominal) lithium-ion battery pack with nickel-manganese-cobalt chemistry.

Claimed driving range is quoted at “up to 620km” for the Single motor, and “up to 590km” for the Dual motor.

The Polestar 4 Long range Dual motor is Polestar’s quickest car yet, boasting a 400kW/686Nm twin-motor electric drivetrain that’s capable of propelling it from 0-100km/h in a claimed 3.8 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 200km/h.
